How to Win Friends and Influence People

Mary Landrieu: Hey, Louisiana voters, you're a bunch of racists and sexists. Now vote for me.

If you read the polls, you know Mary Landrieu is in trouble. However, I'm willing to bet that the internal polling looks even worse, total panic has set in, and she's looking for a scapegoat to explain her failure. How else can you explain her bizarre decision to tell the people of her state - whose votes she so desperately needs - that they're a bunch of sexists and racists?
Here's what she told Chuck Todd yesterday:
“I’m going to be very, very honest with you. The South has not always been the friendliest place for African-Americans. It’s been a difficult time for the president to present himself in a very positive light as a leader."
See, it's not that Obama's a terrible President. He's having "a difficult time" because Landrieu's southern constituents hate the color of his skin. They're so blinded by their inherent racism, that they can't see what an astounding leader they have.

The same thing goes for women...
“It’s not always been a good place for women to be able to present ourselves. It’s more of a conservative place. So we’ve had to work a little bit harder on that."
Just like Obama, it seems, Landrieu is despised not because of her poor performance. In her case, it's because she's a woman. Mary Landrieu's surrogates are all over the place trying to act like she meant these things "past tense." According to them, she was merely acknowledging the history of racism and sexism that, indeed, did exist in the South. However, if that's the case, how is she also using it to explain the current rejection of the President? As usual, she's trying to have it both ways. Governor Bobby Jindal was quick to pounce on Landrieu's claims: Now, just a few days before Election Day, Landrieu is facing a political firestorm. A report from NBC Baton Rouge (which appears below) labels it a P.R. nightmare - but it's actually worse than that. It's not just some simple public relations gaffe. It's the Democrats' Louisiana candidate for Senate revealing what she really believes about the people she claims to represent. ....And it's going to be nearly impossible to walk back.
