Obama tells Baba Wawa: Hey, I've got nowhere to go but up!

I actually admire a person who is willing to think positively in the face of swirling disaster. Sometimes people make the mistake of thinking a leader is "in denial" when he's actually trying to keep his focus on ways to solve the problem.
But in order to apply that to Obama, you'd have to see signs that he is dealing with reality by honestly addressing the problems inherent in his own ill-begotten actions. And the content ABC has just released from his interview with Barbara Walters offers no such signs:
"The good thing about when you're down is that, usually, you got nowhere to go but up," Obama told Barbara Walters of ABC News. Obama also said that the health care plan will work in the long run, that problems with the website will be fixed, and that people who have had their insurance policies canceled will be helped. "I continue to believe, and (I am) absolutely convinced that at the end of the day, people are going to look back at the work we've done to make sure that in this country, you don't go bankrupt when you get sick, that families have that security," Obama said. "That is going be a legacy I am extraordinarily proud of."

All right, let's actually take Obama seriously enough to look at the substance of what he's said here and check it against his premise, which is that ObamaCare has hit a few bumps at the start but it is ultimately a solid plan and will work well. 1. The web site will be fixed. Perhaps, although the problems with the web site are actually the least of ObamaCare's problems. The real problem lies in the wrong premises behind its economic model. Even so, what should be the basis for taking Obama seriously when he assures us the web site will be fixed? Obama assured us confidently throughout the development of the site that it would going to work great, and it turned out he had no idea what was happening with the development and was completely unaware that it was going to be a huge disaster. At least that's his story. A less charitable view is that he knew all along and lied about it. 2. People who have had their insurance policies canceled will be helped. Oh? How? The only thing Obama has proposed to "help" is temporary, technically unfeasible and illegal. Insurance companies who have to determine the contents of their policies and the amounts of their premiums way in advance are in no position to just un-cancel, on a dime, the plans they were forced to cancel because of ObamaCare - no matter what Obama says in a press conference. The House bill that would restore these plans permanently will not be allowed by Harry Reid to come up for a vote in the Senate, and Obama would presumably veto it anyway. So how exactly are they going to be helped? 3. Making sure people don't go bankrupt because they are sick? The premise here is that health-related bankruptcies are always caused by lack of health insurance, and that ObamaCare is the solution. But that doesn't match the reality when millions have had their insurance policies canceled, and estimates are that this number could top 80 million by the time the law starts taking apart employer-provided health plans toward the end of next year. Meanwhile, just barely more than 100,000 people have even picked out health plans via ObamaCare, and many of those have not acutally bought a plan, no doubt as a result of sticker shock when they saw how high the premiums would be. So if lack of insurance is the problem that causes bankruptcy, there is no way ObamaCare can be the solution because it has caused far more people to lose their insurance than it has provided access to insurance for anyone who didn't already have it. Finally, let's consider Obama's political calculation - that there is nowhere for him to go but up. Want a bet, champ? At 39 percent, you're basically left with nothing but your base of hard-core Democrat voters who would support the Democrat ticket if it consisted of Carlos Danger and Vanilla Ice. You don't think you can start losing them? Remember, these are the people who hoped all along that ObamaCare was just a stepping stone to single-payer. What's going to happen now that they realize another mid-term Red Wave is coming and all hope of furthering the socialist dream is lost? You don't think they'll start turning on Obama at that point? Hello, 22 percent approval, baby! I do know a way Obama could reverse his slide. I'll even tell him what it is. Sign a bill repealing ObamaCare, and sit down with leaders of both parties to develop a new set of health care finance laws that actually work for the people of this nation. It's guaranteed to work, and I for one would be thrilled if he would do it. I don't mind Obama's approval rating rising if he deserves it. But the likelihood that he does this is even lower than his approval rating, and that's saying something.
