In its ongoing infatuation with international law and treaties that surrender U.S. sovereignty, the Obama White House is working to secure a seat on the United National Human Rights Council. The Council, an inter-governmental UN body charged with promoting and protecting human rights around the globe, has no authority to issue binding legal judgments and can only offer advisory opinions on perceived violations. In an effort to secure this seat, the Obama administration has submitted a series of "Commitments and Pledges" declaring its loyalty and "deep commitment" to the United Nations.
The move is little more than another attempt at political correctness by an administration frantic for the approval of the international community, says Dr. Michael Farris, chancellor of Patrick Henry College and founder of the Parentalrights.org. Farris drafted the Parental Rights Amendment, recently introduced in Congress, to protect American families against the intrusion of UN treaties such as the UNCRC (UN Convention on the Rights of the Child), that could prevent parents from spanking their children or directing their religious upbringing.
"In its recent calloused flyover of New York City, the (Obama) administration demonstrated it is all about photo ops," says Dr. Farris, "Gaining a seat on the Human Rights Council would amount to little more than a diplomatic photo op, since America would acquire one vote out of 47 on a council which has no binding authority."
In its document of "Commitments and Pledges," released March 31 by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and U.S. representative to the UN, Susan Rice, the administration vowed support for a variety of UN bodies and treaties. Included among them is CEDAW (the Convention on Elimination of Discrimination Against Women), billed as an international bill of rights for women, which also relinquishes U.S. sovereignty. Dr. Farris warns that both the UNCRC and CEDAW, if ratified, will not only jeopardize U.S. sovereignty but hasten the end of the traditional American family. Secretary Clinton and U.S. President Barack Obama have both verbalized their support for ratification of both treaties.
"All UN treaties require strict scrutiny," Dr. Farris cautions. "Apparently, for this administration, membership on a UN Council with no meaningful authority is more important than the right of Americans to retain control over their public policy."
