Shifting tactics, Manufactured hysteria

The immigration freakout can't keep up forever, so it's time to watch for Media Frenzy 2.0

Yesterday we described in several commentaries Immigration Media Frenzy 1.0, which was the liberals and Democrats freaking out over the executive order on immigration by President Trump. The freak-out was based on lies. The order was not a ban on Muslims, it was not illegal, and it was not unconstitutional. Additionally, the targeted countries had been specifically identified by the previous administration. The Trump Administration simply decided to enforce the laws within its powers. And! Previous administrations had issued similar executive orders.
To add to the manufactured hysteria, protests occurred all over the country, which the media was only too happy to display in its news coverage. Of course, the news coverage was about the protests (based on lies) and not about the facts. Now, many stories are being published as followups to Media Frenzy 1.0, showing us continued outrage over the original EO. All of the stories published would be overwhelming for this space, so here are a few highlights that Jared found: "DEMOCRAT ALL-NIGHT TALK-A-THON Democrats are prepared to keep the Senate in late as they protest President Trump's order banning for 90 days immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries entering the U.S." "GLOBAL TENSION President Trump faced a growing international backlash as foreign nations, including key US allies, and chiefs of industry denounced his immigration order." "DEVELOPING The acting U.S. attorney general, Sally Yates, said she will not defend President Trump's executive order regarding immigration because she is not convinced it is "lawful," according to a letter." "THE BACKLASH GROWS Over 100 former officials who served under past presidents of both parties signed a letter calling on the current heads of multiple government agencies to urge President Donald Trump to “revisit and rescind” his recent executive order on immigration and refugees."

"BACKSEAT DRIVER BARACK Former President Obama praised protesters who amassed across the country in opposition to President Trump's immigration orders, breaking his silence on political issues for the first time since leaving office." "ANOTHER STATE JOINS THE FIGHT The state of Washington announced a legal challenge and former President Obama took a swipe at his successor. Washington will be the first state to take on the executive order, announcing an effort to sue in federal court." "STARBUCKS Facing foreigners’ mounting fury toward the U.S. and American companies, Starbucks has issued a pledge to hire 10,000 refugees around the world over the next five years." "MARKET DIP Wall Street started to account for political and policy risk for the first time in the Trump era, with the Dow suffering its biggest point drop since the election amid fallout stemming from President Trump's order to clamp down on immigration from seven Middle East countries." "DESPITE THE CLAIMS The U.S. government has granted waivers to let 872 refugees into the country this week, despite President Trump's executive order according to an internal Department of Homeland Security document."

What? The U.S. government has granted waivers to let 872 refugees into the country this week. Where's the breaking news announcement? Or the announcement that only 109 people were detained on Saturday, which was the first day of Media Frenzy 1.0? I think you are connecting the dots. There is no there there. This whole media and political escapade is an attempt to discredit, slow down and distract the 11-day-youngTrump Administration. I don't think this tactic has legs. Let's see what they try next.
