Much has been made of Sodom’s obsession with sex and homosexuality and their obsession with immediate self-gratification at any cost. But that was not “the sin of Sodom’. It was only an indicator of the depth of depravity that the area had fallen into. It was the nadir and death knell of a formerly advanced civilization.
So what was “the sin of Sodom”? According to Ezekiel 16:49 “Behold, this was the iniquity (sin) of thy sister Sodom, pride, fullness of bread and abundance of idleness was in her and her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.” “Pride” (arrogance, narcissism), answering to no one or nothing except their own desires. “Fullness of bread” or great affluence, Sodom and the five cities of the plain was a very rich area. This area lay on a trade route between the Sinai and the Fertile Crescent and at that time it was an irrigated farming area that provided food and entertainment for the caravans, it was the Las Vegas or the New Orleans of the ancient world.

“Abundance of idleness”, or boredom, restlessness, (the idle rich) since many of them were so wealthy they did not have to work and spent their time thrill seeking. So what does this have to do with us? “Pride.” You see it in the tilted backwards head, the denigrating look and the angry finger pointing of our President. It is manifest in the cocky cowbird strut of the President, Legislators, Governors and Mayors. Also in the media and entertainment celebrities. We see it in the overly pompous approach to the speaker’s podium, like a strutting turkey gobbler. It is typified by their refusal to accept responsibility for their mistakes and blaming others. It is seen in the obsession with narcissism and self- centeredness of our nation. “Fullness of Bread.” America has long been the richest nation earth. “Abundance of idleness.” With the wealth of welfare programs and food stamps, many do not have to work and do not want to. Young College aged adults are supported by their wealthy parents and are free to demonstrate, destroy, riot and raise hell, (OWS). They spend their time experimenting with sex and drugs. They have nothing better to do and no desire to do anything worthwhile. “Neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.” There is an alarming trend among our cities to shut down any food kitchen or homeless shelter provided by private charity. And, in spite of claims to the contrary, they are not offering any alternative. The last decade has seen an unprecedented obsession with homosexuality. It is teetering on the verge of becoming mandatory. We are nearing the collapse of our own civilization.
