The Turk Hates Republicans

At Gleason’s gym I call him the Turk. He is 6’3’’ and two hundred and seventy pounds. He fought on the Turkish Olympic boxing development team. The guy is great—friendly, jovial and polite. He cooperates with me and spars with some of my students, never throwing a sucker punch.
I have been friendly with him for several years. Until Saturday I never realized what a stubborn, prejudiced liberal he was. Kind of shocking when you realize he comes from a rapidly turning Islamic country like Turkey. In 1972 I visited Istanbul on my honeymoon. I thought it was exotic but dirty, not enjoying the renaissance it is experiencing today. The Grand Bazaar was the grand beggar’s market. The current fashionable buildings in Istanbul obfuscate Turkey’s recidivistic reattachment to Moslem culture, its resurgence of anti-Semitism and its drift from the west. Turks were never known for their kindness. Many of us remember the movie, “Midnight Express.” I don’t know what kind of game the Turk is playing with his pretend liberalism. I guess a lot of the liberals contain secret authoritarians inside of them.

We somehow get into a discussion about how he hates Republicans and he considers them tantamount to red necks. Looking at me he might have said Jews. But liberals, even anti-Semitic liberals, would never admit to Jew-hatred in front of a Jew. Then they’d have to admit to a strain of fascism and they prefer to hide their prejudice so they can continue to be bigoted sub-rosa, without flaunting it, and without having to judge themselves. They prefer to let the Ahmadinejad’s of the world do their talking for them. It’s like the American female libbers befriending the Moslems even though the Islamists mistreat women, honor-kill them and cut off their clitorises. Many liberals and female libbers tend to be loving and generous in their declarations but cruel in their acceptance of monstrous male Islamic practices. After I leave the gym I send the Turk an email—“You're prejudice against red necks and Republicans is a typical left wing attitude. I'm surprised that in not being American you fall into naive anti-southern bigotry. You probably have never even seen a red neck. Even I, who think liberalism is a derivative of failed communism, do not ipso facto denigrate liberals. You are a rug merchant. Not a class of businessman known for intellect. I have a Ph.D. and have published five books. Perhaps Republicans can be smart?” I feel a little bad that I pulled rank on the Ph.D. but what the heck? After all, it is part of my curriculum vitae. It is what I had to rise above to get away from academic bigotry. George answers me: “Unlike Republicans, everything I make is reinvested within the community, and nothing goes to finance luxury spending. We like sharing things, when I was illegal in this country I had a surgery through HHC…. If it is up to red necks they would let me die.” Gee, that remark that red necks would let you die is as ridiculous as the commercial where an old man is pushed off a cliff on his wheelchair. And what about Obama stripping Medicare of 500 billion dollars? And what about his giving forty million people who haven’t earned medical insurance coverage while he dilutes the policies of the other three hundred million? Is that his idea of the fair share, of sharing the accomplishments of the earners with the do nothings? Since when did sainthood become pilfering from the rich in a reversal of values to give to the undeserving? I send George another e-mail—“My boy, your prejudice against Republicans is exaggerated. I'm surprised at you. Even I who am shocked by the hypocrisy and misguided socialism of Democrats do not consistently hate them. Anyhow, I have no wish to argue with you. You are too big. I will just pretend that you don't hate Republicans en masse and dismiss the whole issue as irrelevant.” It’s a shame that the Turk repeats all the Democrat clichés about Republicans wanting everyone to die. It is a particular joke when Obama wants to institute affordable (it’s less affordable) healthcare and to ration out senior care, killing the less youthful and more costly. It’s hard to fight against the prejudice of lefties. Turks combine fascism and communism. They have never been known for their kindness to strangers. Just ask the Greeks.
