Wow: Insanely left-wing Detroit Free Press editor, who loves John Conyers, calls on him to resign

Insanely left-wing Detroit Free Press editor, who loves John Conyers, calls on him to resign I guess the power of what Hot Air's Allahpundit has labeled "pervnado" is even more powerful than racial identity politics, at least at the moment. It probably doesn't hurt that John Conyers is 88 years old and is hardly the future of the Democratic Party, but it's hard to overstate the significance of Detroit Free Press editorial page editor Stephen Henderson calling for Conyers to resign. Why? Because Henderson is about the biggest race-monger in America, and makes everything that ever happens about race. He doesn't just stop with the stuff he writes for the Free Press, which is insane enough. How loony is Henderson? He actually wrote a column calling for Republican legislators to be murdered because they passed a school reform he didn't like.
He will berate you endlessly on social media if you dare to question his diatribes about how racist white America is. And he loves John Conyers. But don't just take my word for it. Here's what he actually said about it on Facebook:
I’m still scratching my head, trying to figure out how on earth anyone believed it would be ok for John Conyers Jr. to give a sexual harassment accuser a no-show job, finances with public money, in exchange for her withdrawing her formal congressional complaint against him. No joy at all in publishing this editorial. One of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever had to make, given the deep respect I have for Conyers’ many accomplishments. But not much choice on this one.
And it reads like a we-wrote-this-because-there-was-no-way-to-avoid-it sort of thing, but nevertheless, the lefties at the Freep swallowed hard and called for Conyers's scalp:

He has been an undisputed hero of the civil rights movement, a legislator of uncommon influence and power, and an aging icon whose felonious wife and sometimes-wandering pace have confounded his place in history. But the revelations of Conyers’ alleged sexual harassment scandal and his documented use of taxpayer dollars to bury that scandal, in violation of congressional ethics rules, is less ambiguous. It is the kind of behavior that can never be tolerated in a public official, much less an elected representative of the people. And it means that whatever Conyers’ legacy will eventually be, his tenure as a member of Congress must end — now. He should resign his position and allow the investigation into his behavior to unfold without the threat that it would render him, and the people he now represents, effectively voiceless. We reach this conclusion with an incredible amount of disappointment.

The word “hero” is invoked, without much hyperbole, around Conyers’ name, dating not only to his initial run for Congress in the mid-1960s, but to the stalwart civil rights activism in the 1950s and early 1960s that brought him to that point. His career in Congress saw him play key roles in everything from voting rights and health care reform to the creation of the Martin Luther King Holiday. And even in recent years, when he has struggled with focus and the rigor of the job, he has remained a steadfast voice for social justice and equality. But even the most generous interpretation of the story revealed early this week is absolutely devastating to his ability to stay in Congress.

What sets this apart from the other pervnado stories?

What sets this apart from the other pervnado stories is that Conyers used taxpayer money and absued Congress's employment rules in order to cover up his misbehavior. This is the sort of thing that would be a gigantic scandal and a huge news story if it wasn't happening in the midst of so many similar things going on. There was a time not long ago - like, a few weeks ago - when secrets like this were lodged against a very well fortified dam, and we never saw or heard a thing about them. The dam hasn't just broken. It's gone. The gusher is unlike anything we've seen in recent memory.

He can see there's no future for an 88-year-old sexual miscreant who's been caught red-handed misusing taxpayer money to cover up his behavior

I think Henderson's decision to call for Conyers's resignation is in large part strategic. He can see there's no future for an 88-year-old sexual miscreant who's been caught red-handed misusing taxpayer money to cover up his behavior, and if you're a left-wing black nationalist type you probably prefer to see someone new step in and take the reins of Conyers's district while you can control what's going on. Conyers's wife Monica, by the way, went to prison for bribery after her stint on the Detroit City Council, so the family business has itself quite the track record. And I'll respectfully disagree with the assessment of Conyers as any sort of "hero." He was on the right side of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s, but during his years in Congress he's consistently supported the kinds of policies that have kept the poor in poverty and dependent on the public dole. Detroit's current turnaround is mainly because it has new leaders who don't think like John Conyers. But in lefty world, Conyers is and has long been an icon, so that gives you a sense of just how serious his sins have to be for them to call for his ouster. Pervnado is proving to be quite the moment of clarity. And I have a feeling we're not near the end of it.
