Prime Minister Jean Chrétien has reached the Mount Everest pinnacle of politically correct. In a career that stretches back almost 40 years, Chretien boasts that one of his proudest moments in public life was keeping all mention of the Christian God out of the Parliament Hill ceremony following Sept. 11.
One ponders to which god Chrétien is paying allegiance.
Is it the new secular religion of paganism known as Gaia currently sweeping the United Nations?
Chrétiens fellow traveler, multi-billionaire Canadian Maurice Strong is the former chairman of the far-out Earth Council. In 1992, Strong orchestrated the United Nations Earth Summit, which called for the developed world to pony up, for its purported environmental sins, $600-billion to the Third World.
Strong and his wife Hanne run the private Manitou Foundation, a gathering place for religious sects, located on a 63,000-acre ranch in Colorado known as Baca Grande, which has become a haven for mystics.
Under Strongs UN stewardship, the UN can now boast a pagan room and a meditation room. Incredibly, the UN even has its own in-house physic who says he was Thomas Jefferson in another life. (See International Watch on this website).
Among Strongs personal friends and admirers are media mogul Ted Turner, who has said "Christianity is a religion for losers", and former Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who likens Strongs recent UN Earth Charter to the Ten Commandments.
While world leaders like Chrétien are tolerant of the regime who puts love of the environment above all else, they are less than tolerant of the Christian God.
Alas, the funky Canadian Prime Minister seems to have joined the ranks of the tragically hip. Bet that wont stop him from hobnobbing with Pope John Paul 11 later this week or taking full credit for Youth Day.
Was it really all that long ago when wartime world leaders gave positive messages of hope and inspiration to the citizens of nations? When world leaders proudest moments in public life centred around their aspiration to free human slaves, or to dedicate lifetime missions to education or feeding the poor?
Now we know that one of Jean Chrétiens proudest moments in public life speaks to none of the noble above but to have kept all mention of the Christian God out of the lackluster Parliament Hill ceremony following Sept. 11.
In a politically correct world, it seems that the Christian God, very much like the pinstriped suits of aging politicians, has gone out of fashion. So have decency, loyalty, common sense and patriotism.
For those of us saddened by the stated ideals of the Canadian Prime Minister, we must remember Jean Chrétien is a Liberal. And like most Liberals, he stands for everything and he stands for nothing.
