Oh, Canada!: Land of the Maple Leaf and American bashing

Strident Anti-American sentiment is not just thousands of miles away from American soil, but right next door.

Members of the Canadian delegation at last week’s NATO meeting openly criticized George W. Bush, with Francoise Ducros going so far as to call the U.S. president a "moron". Canadian Defence Minister John McCallum went on the public record to say that the American president should stop lecturing Canada about defence spending.

And that’s just the American bashing that splashes onto the front page.

Liberal backbencher MPs like Alex Shepherd are attacking Americans from their taxpayer-paid websites.

Shepherd, touted as a dynamic businessman on his biography, is the MP of Durham riding and parliamentary secretary to Treasury Board President Lucienne Robillard.

In an article condemning American foreign policy, Shepherd--whom until recently owned apartment buildings in Houston, Texas--wrote, "For me our biggest threat is the U.S. not the people of Iraq."

"Recently I read a newspaper story that stated the U.S. will strike first at anyone it considers an enemy," said Shepherd. "How strange and Draconian, that this policy approach has been accepted by western countries. If the U.S. said this in the 60s or 70s the streets would be full of protesters. Its (sic) alarming today everyone sits contemplatively as the United States engages in a unilateral approach to world affairs."

According to an Internet biography, Shepherd, a one-time farm owner, is founder and CEO of Cressbrook Financial Services, Cressbrook Investment Limited and Cressbrook Inc., based in Houston, Texas.

A corporate search on Cressbrook Inc. shows at least one tax lien against it.

In a phone interview, Shepherd said he travelled back and forth to Houston on business "until only a few years ago."

"I am not anti-American; I am pro-Canadian," he told CanadaFreePress.com

Not only did he stand behind the comments in his article, Shepherd went on to accuse the American government of "using bullying tactics in a unilateral approach to world affairs."

"They (Americans) only want us to spend more on defence funding to make us their appendage so that we can protect them," he said.

When asked if there was any American response to his article, Shepherd replied: "Most Americans don’t have a clue about Canada."

"Our Prime Minister was right on the mark when he said that 75 percent of all congressmen do not have passports."

The Durham MP claimed that the only Americans responding to the article had said, "When you’re attacking Bush, you are attacking Christianity."

At least one Canadian taxpayer is taking Shepherd to task, courtesy of a letter to "Prime Minister Jean Chretien and all concerned citizens of Canada and the United States" with carbon copies to Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney.

"It is absolutely disgusting and appalling to have a sitting member of the Liberal Government of Canada call the United States of America our "biggest threat," wrote British Columbia resident Blake MacKenzie.

"If America is such the aggressor nation as Mr. Shepherd points out, why were not Japan or Germany completely destroyed and left desolate after World War II? Instead, America helped rebuild these nations into the top eight free and prosperous nations on earth. What would the Socialists have done? Let them live under the unforgiving chains of slavery, of course."

MacKenzie posted a question to Canada’s governing Liberals: "My real question is to the Canadian Liberal Government on why they wish to be seen hanging their hats with Third World despots, terrorists and Communist regimes, rather than building on the greatest partnership between two nations… in the history of the world?

"When is the Liberal Government of Canada going to end the rampant venomous anti-Americanism within their party and government policy? We Canadians are getting tired of the fear mongering that America is hostile to Canadian sovereignty. Let this rhetoric be buried once and for all with its founder and chief promoter forever, Pierre Elliot Trudeau.

"I wonder if the real threat to the Liberal Government of Canada is the message America has for all nations on earth which runs diametrically opposed to highly managed, despotic and dictatorial governments. Individual liberty and freedom for all. No wonder the Liberal Government of Canada may think this is their 'biggest threat'."
