Welcome to Canada, the New Soviet Union

Message to our man Don Martin "in Ottawa for the National Post", who dares to ponder why "Chretien snubs the worst tragedy of our time". For Americans and Europeans who may be reading this, Martin (no relation to Canada’s in hiding Prime-Minister-in-Waiting) is one of the Post’s best columnists.

The message: Don, don’t you get it? It’s not just Prime Minister Jean Chretien who was an "official no-show on the second anniversary of the World Trade Centre terrorist attacks." Missing from action was the entire Canadian Establishment.

Where was Prime-Minister-in-Waiting Paul Martin on the second anniversary of the greatest tragedy our time? Holed up on his Quebec farm, whiling away the days to his coming coronation

There can be no doubt that both Chretien and Martin knew where all their friends were. On the very eve of the second anniversary of Sept. 11, they were preparing for the "journey of a lifetime."

According to your own Ottawa Bureau Chief Robert Fife, Don…Adrienne Clarkson, and her philosopher-writer husband, John Ralston Saul, were "jetting a who’s who of the Canadian establishment on a taxpayer-paid state visit to Russia, Finland and Iceland."

Why?

"To affirm "our shared northern identity.""

Your bureau chief wrote the story straight, as opposed to the more critical versions of the television journalists who broke the story.

Yes, Don, on the eve of the second anniversary of 9/11, when most folk were thinking back to the horror of two years ago in New York, former CBC journalist, governor-general Madame Clarkson was sorting through her drawers, organizing silk undies to be packed for the trip.

Only the crème de la crème will accompany the loving couple on the 19-day tour, kicking off Sept. 23 at a cost of more than $1 million for Canadian taxpayers. Don’t worry about it, Don. Everyone Russia bound is "quality" people, like former socialist Ontario Premier Bob Rae. Rae’s beloved "Uncle Mo", Maurice Strong, a special advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, advocate of one-world government and longtime mentor of Paul Martin will be there.

One can only imagine the emails to a certain Quebec farm from good old Uncle Mo, who is poised to join the Prime Minister’s Office as a senior advisor, when the time is more…well, appropriate.

Between champagne sipping, caviar tasting, etc., Clarkson and company describe the importance of their mission thus: "As Canadians, we are an imaginative, complex, creative society conscious of our place in the circumpolar world. As Madame put it in a statement: "By bringing these talented Canadians to help us represent Canada, we will engage Russians, Finns and Icelanders in a vigorous exchange of ideas and culture affirming and strengthening our shared northern identity."

Pass ‘round the champers with which to bless Madame’s hand-stitched bloomers.

For the artsy-fartsy, it’s much easier to identify with northerners than with those can’t’-get-over-the-terrorists damn Yankees.

Dare we say that it’s possible the National Post has been missing the boat on what’s really shaking in Ottawa?

Chretien and Martin--barely on speaking terms according to the mainline media--come from the same Power Corp., UN love-in background.

Here at the irreverent Canadafreepress.com, we think we know why the "thou-shalt-not-mention-the-Christian-God" Chretien continues to snub the worst tragedy of our time.

We think we know too that Clarkson, Strong Rae and company are not really out there searching out our circumpolar soul mates.

Adrienne Clarkson and Company, who always enjoy la dolce vita, are ‘circumpolaring’ only because they can get away with it.

Meantime, welcome to Canada, the coming new Soviet Union.
