The man who sold the world

by Sean Beesley, Spin Killer

July 12, 2004

I was listening to the old David Bowie song, "The man who sold the world" today and the title got me thinking about someone.

He lies and distorts truth to support his agenda. He has used mass deception, manipulation and smoke and mirror tactics in and attempt to influence what he calls "régime" change. He has misrepresented america to the world. He has lied to america and the world about the justification for the war in Iraq. He has insulted americas allies and the leaders of great nations and attempted to influence the democratic process in others. He has lined his pockets with the profits of his deceit. He is an arrogant, self-serving and power hungry man. Sound familiar?

Jeeze, I sound like Ted Rall!

am I joining the ranks of mindless Bush Bashers? Sorry not today. I am of course talking about Michael Moore, the giant self-proclaimed bobble head leader of the left himself. Following the hoopla surrounding this man, who is larger than life in every possible way, is an infuriating exercise in restraint. With F 9/11, his "cut and paste" flick, becoming the highest grossing, (I hesitate to call it), documentary ever in North america. His fans see him as some kind of visionary messiah that has come to save us all from the bondage of a maniacal Bush administration. While his detractors have provided us with a bottomless pit of debunking information that equals if not exceeds the actual content of all of his flicks combined. Of course, the hype started with the controversy over who was going to distribute the film and mass speculation as to it's content. Then there was the not so hyped report in the Washington Times and the Guardian about the offer of support from Hezbollah. Which was a telling signal as to the movies content in itself, but it was even more disturbing because the movie's distributor refused to reject the terrorist support stating, "We can't go against these organizations, as they could strongly boycott the film in Lebanon and Syria." Then came the screenings and reviews. along with these, Moore's girth seemed to grow from it's already substantial size to envelope an entire continent until it was all anyone could see, hear, or talk about. Then came the first bomb here in Canada. Moore, feeling larger than life, decided to tell Canadians how to vote. Yes, the man who claims that america should keep it's nose out of other countries business, went into Savior mode, admonishing us to beware of the evils of Stephen Harper and the conservatives. It was the beginning of what has become Moore's "crusade", which has marched on country to country. Moore's ego and shadow presently hangs around the world as he fuels tinfoil hat sporting fans everywhere. Why just yesterday, aP reported that Moore's crusade for "Regime" change is now targeting all countries that have supported america in Iraq, stating to australians

"What's confusing to me is how someone like John Howard can get in bed with George W. Bush," Moore said. "He at least appears to have half a brain ... It's really disgraceful."

"I hope that australians that see this film will say to themselves, we need some regime change here in our country,"

Italians

"If I were an Italian citizen, leaving this film after two hours, I would be wondering, 'What the hell was (Berlusconi) doing hooking up with George W. Bush?"

"This is an embarrassment to Italy, and the sooner that there's regime change in Rome, all the better,"

Japanese

To see you involve yourselves in this way is a sad day," he said. "It's a shameful and disgraceful thing."

The size of this man's ego is so enormous that I fear that it may explode and consume the world with an LSD induced mass hallucination. Ooops, it already has. But the fact of the matter is that the Moore phenomenon is something that has been seen over and over again. Yes, from snake oil salesmen, to pet rocks, and magnetic healing bracelets, there is the hype and there is the scam. The only difference with Michael Moore is that he is both. He is the man who sold the world again.
