Jack be nimble

by Sean Beesley, Spin Killer

July 13, 2004

Jack be nimble, Jack be slick, when Jack's got his hand out, you have to be quick...

Yes, jumping Jack flash is basking in his glory. Like a child who's finally got his parents attention, Jack is doing the happy dance. Not unlike our favorite Mad T.V. grown up child "Stewart", it seems Jack is ready to declare "LOOK WHaT I CaN DO!" while attempting a feat of contorted acrobatics sending him careening into a wall. Yes, Jack's got it all figured out. Last Thursday's Star reports on Layton’s commitment to holding Liberals to their "progressive" agenda, and to gun for Kyoto implementation. The fact that Liberals would govern every part of our lives if they could, and reward Canadian apathy in the form of handouts at election time is not a surprise. They may spring a leak in the ship to do it, and we will have to pay to fix it. But, Jack, well Jack would sink the ship so we could go for a swim. Do you recall in May Jack's proud solution to the implementation of Kyoto. No...well, Jack feels it would be a swell idea to tap our already strapped Canadian Pension Plan to the tune of $100 million dollars to retro fit "older, less energy efficient buildings". But Jack insists that the Public's money would be repayed. Uh-hem...Ok sure.

as a friend commented to me, what's next tapping UI to provide everyone with free computers? Don’t let Jack catch wind of that idea. Moving on to defense, a participant over at Spin Killer pointed out Jack’s robust response to our Military Crisis. To their credit Jack and friends feel that Canada’s Military crisis warrants a whole page to Canadian Military policy. The policy page entitled "a Stronger Canada - Defense Policy", even sports three whole paragraphs dedicated to the crisis. as they say, we need not worry the NDP have a "clear vision for the future".

With our armed Forces facing Bankruptcy and base closures, our brave men and women putting their lives on line just by using our present dilapidated equipment, or putting on their green fatigues in the desert, we need not worry. Jack’s got it covered with this, "The NDP has a clear vision for the future. New Democrats believe that Canada and its defense forces should be a leader in international peacekeeping. additional resources should be devoted to peacekeeping and to salaries, benefits, housing and living conditions for armed services personnel, and for educational and health care services for military families". I love policies containing the word "should" instead of "will". Well, at least we all agree that "Canada and its defense forces SHOULD BE a leader in international peacekeeping".

So, some things never change, the NDP party under any and all unsuccessful leaders has always, and will always, view the Canadian military as just a larger than normal pack of Boy Scouts with just enough funding to allow inside training maneuvers in a church basement. Keeping in the theme of Canadian security Jack has a couple great ideas:

"Establishing a Royal Commission to conduct a full, thorough review of Canada’s role as a middle, humanitarian power in a post-Cold War world";

Scrap the anti-Terrorism act .

Excellent, who doesn’t love a great Royal Commission, and why protect ourselves against terrorism, everyone loves Canada?

It was easy to chuckle and sit back and enjoy the Layton sideshow prior to the election. But with Jack’s new found power and a pending recount in the Westminster-Coquitlam riding, that could mean a Liberal / NDP Majority coalition, Jumping Jack’s agenda has now moved into the realm of reality and that is nothing to joke about. Big spending, big taxes, big economic meltdown, double the bashing pleasure of our american friends, big smiling Jack is on the attack.
