Liberals vote against keeping their promise

Diane Finley, M.P.

Haldimand-Norfolk, ON

Official Opposition Critic for agriculture and agri-food

February 9, 2005

OTTaWa— Today the Liberal government voted against a motion calling on them to honour the commitments they have made to farmers.

The motion, tabled by Official Opposition agriculture Critic Diane Finley (Haldimand-Norfolk), and debated on February 3rd, also demanded that the CaIS cash deposit requirement be dropped.

"Personally, I find it unconscionable that any government would show their disdain so blatantly.  By voting this way the Liberal government has clearly shown what many of us have suspected for a long time: they have no use or respect for Canada’s farming community," said Finley.

The motion, which was voted down by agriculture Minister andy Mitchell, had the unanimous support of the Conservatives, the Bloc Quebecois and the N.D.P., and passed with 158 votes in favour and 114 against.

"The House of Commons has spoken overwhelmingly on these issues.  If the Minister of agriculture does not act on this motion - and soon - he will be ignoring the will of the House. The Minister and his cabinet will be thumbing their noses at Canada’s Parliament, the democratic process, and at farmers across this country," concluded Finley.
