Global warming, money grab

Greenhouse gasbags gather in Montreal

Henry Lamb
Monday, December 5, 2005

Once again, the global warming industry is holding its annual party, this time, in Montreal. Nearly 10,000 celebrants have gathered to eat, drink, and be merry - and to bash the U.S. for withdrawing from the Kyoto Protocol. Less than half the crowd are official delegates from 180 nations; the rest are advocates representing hundreds of non-government organizations.

The stated purpose of the meeting is to construct the regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in phase two of the Kyoto Protocol - the period after 2012. The real purpose is to party first, bash the U.S., and then produce a highly-publicized consensus statement that declares that the world as we know it will surely perish, unless the U.S. submits to emissions regulations dictated by the U.N.

Of the 180 nations represented, only 35 are targeted to be bound by the Kyoto Protocol; all the other nations are free to spew as much gas as they wish - including greenhouse gases.

Perhaps the most important component of the global warming theory was not invited. Science was carefully eliminated from the guest list several years ago, when it began to interfere with the gloom and doom scenario required to justify the billions of dollars the global warming industry consumes each year.

Science is supposed to be a quest for truth. The quest for truth invariably produces conflicting results. as conflicting results are resolved through further testing of various hypotheses, doubt is slowly squeezed out of the consensus. The global warming industry has no time for this tedious process. Under the authority of the U.N., the global warming industry declared, years ago, that the science was settled; that any doubt that remained existed only in the minds of a few, energy company stooges.

Rather than confront scientific studies that challenge the global warming theory, the global warming industry simply declared such studies to be the flawed work of coal and petroleum industry puppets. This declaration simply dismisses the conclusion reached by more than 17,000 scientists, who have said publicly that:

"There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate. Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth."

More than 2,600 of these scientists have advanced degrees in climate-related fields. The U.N.- sponsored global warming party in Montreal will not allow the concerns of these scientists to even be heard.

Why? Follow the money - and the power.

Billions of dollars are spent each year in an effort to reduce carbon emissions. The people who benefit from these expenditures are the strongest advocates for the global warming hypothesis. Scientists, and universities secures gobs of grants each year to "study" global warming. These grants will vanish, if the doom and gloom is removed from the global warming threat.

If the U.N., through an international treaty, is able to control the emissions limits of any country, it automatically controls the energy consumption of that country. Like it or not, there is a direct correlation between energy consumption and economic prosperity. Reduce energy consumption - and down goes the economy.

The U.N., and the rest of the world, want to bring the United States under the control of an international authority. The Kyoto Protocol was thought to be just the treaty to do it. The International Criminal Court was also expected to bring the U.S. further under U.N. authority, but President Bush said no to both.

For all the noise and hot air rising from Montreal during this global meeting, nothing will change. Nature will continue to do whatever it chooses to do. Science will continue to seek the truth, despite the U.N.’s rejection of it. Global warming advocates will continue to spew forth their propaganda, and the delegates will continue to enjoy the high life - fine wines, fine foods, and fine hotels - the likes of which do not exist in the countries where most of the delegates live. and of course, american taxpayers foot the bill for one-fourth - or more - of the cost.

The global warming industry is not about to let anything upset this joyride - especially conflicting science. It’s much easier to simply denounce divergent views than to disprove them. U.N. conferences have become the global stage for the world’s favorite entertainment - U.S. bashing.

This Montreal conference produced far more greenhouse gas emissions than it will prevent; if these people really wanted to help the planet, they should have just stayed at home.
