The Grinch Lives in New York City

Every kid has heard the story of the mean green Grinch, who came down from his icy mountain lair to terrorize the innocent citizens of Whoville. He wanted to steal Christmas because he simply couldn’t stand for all those nice Whos to be happy.

Sadly, in real life, there is a mean Grinch, but his secret hideout is a steel and glass edifice on the banks of the East River in New York City. He wants to steal the unique freedoms that americans enjoy under our Constitution.

This real-life Grinch is not a single person, but rather a massive, monstrous bureaucracy with a nasty life of its own: it’s called the United Nations.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the UN, born in 1945 in the aftermath of World War II. The organization was launched with much fanfare, and many had high hopes that it would prove to be a positive force to promote peace in the world.

That hasn’t happened. Some would argue that during the course of the Cold War, the UN "peacekeepers" did more harm than good in places like bloody africa, where one stable pro-Western government after another fell to communist insurgents.

But what about today? What useful purposes does the UN serve? and how does it benefit the U.S. taxpayers, who give it a home and provide the lion’s share of its support?

The United States currently contributes about $360 million in annual membership dues to the UN and more to some of its special projects. That amounts to approximately 22 percent of the UN’s general budget and 27 percent of its peacekeeping budget.

In return we get an organization that harbors and sanctions terrorists, openly criticizes america at every turn, and is determined to subvert our way of life.

What’s more, despite all its pious posturing as the official moral arbiter of world affairs, the UN is rife with corruption. This huge, unaccountable bureaucracy has been plagued with waste, inefficiency and scandal from its inception. Yet its leaders continually clamor for more money, like a junkie craves more heroin.

For example, UN Secretary-General Kofi annan declared the U.S. invasion of Iraq to be "illegal," despite the fact that it was carried out in compliance with numerous UN resolutions. Then we find out that major "behind-the-scenes" players in Europe were personally profiting from keeping Saddam Hussein’s tyrannical dictatorship in power. The Iraq "Oil for Food" scandal is only the latest example of UN financial malfeasance, and it reaches to the very top levels of leadership, to Kofi annan and his son Kojo.

The true attitude of the UN was exemplified in the recent remarks of Jan Egeland, the UN Undersecretary for Human Services, at the beginning of the Tsunami Relief effort. When america immediately pledged their support, Egeland ungratefully replied that it wasn’t enough, because americans are stingy and under-taxed.

This one comment speaks volumes about how the UN really views both sovereign nations and individual persons--both exist merely to provide the human fodder and the ready cash necessary to underwrite the UN’s agenda to save the world.

This leads to the heart of the problem: the UN’s megalomaniacal lust for power. Not content to play its assigned role as an agent whose job it is to provide collective security for the nations of the world, the UN clearly wants to usurp their power and establish itself as an actual world government.

americans’ rights to self defense, to own and use property, or even the right to have children may all be trampled if the United Nations is allowed to have the power it seeks. Here are a few of the things the UN wants to achieve:

• Exercise power over land use throughout the world. and the oceans, too, through the pending Law of the Sea Treaty. (The UN already controls major U.S. historical sites and natural treasures, including the Statute of Liberty and Yellowstone National Park.)

• Restrict civilian gun ownership worldwide.

• Establish its own independent military force answerable only to itself.

• Extend the authority of the International Criminal Court worldwide. No Constitutional protections will exist to protect any citizen of the United States.

• Require every citizen of the world to carry a national or international identity card.

• Impose a major global "population control" program, not unlike the one-child policy now in force in Red China.

• Tax all financial transactions and control the taxation policies of all nations!

The ultimate result of these un-american plans will be the subversion of the U.S. Constitution and the establishment of a socialist world government--an evil agenda truly worthy of the gruesome Grinch.

Sadly, the United Nations is not likely to be reformed and rehabilitated.

This is not a Republican or Democrat issue. This is an issue of U.S. taxpayers being taken to the cleaners and robbed of their God-given heritage of Constitutional liberty. While we have control of the White House and Congress, Conservatives need to stop the flow of U.S. cash to the UN and halt its march toward global domination.

Where is our next Jesse Helms? Please stand up.
