Oil and National Security

In the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, has a single liberal yet figured out that america’s oil interests are tied directly to america’s national security interests?

Did any liberals notice how quickly New Orleans became a third world country run by gangs, thugs and thieves, a city of rape, murder, destruction and chaos once Katrina hit land? Was anyone paying attention to how americans behaved when cities across the country started running low on refined gas supplies for just a couple days?

Have you been listening to the doomsday predictions for job losses, a sky rocketing national debt and high energy prices as we head into the winter months, not to mention the new threats to our borders as a result of depending on questionable foreign nations to deliver refined energy products we can no longer produce ourselves?

Near the top of a very long list of things that directly impact our nation’s security are our energy needs and the resources necessary to meet them. Though our enemies know it well, many americans seem to have missed the obvious truth that nothing can turn america into a third world country faster than interrupting its flow of energy resources.

Yet we have not built a refinery since 1976, allowed new off shore exploration, built a new clean air nuclear facility or even opened up drilling in the alaskan wilderness in an effort to improve america’s ability to meet its own energy needs. Why?

I have nothing against the spotted owl, caribou or any other animal. But putting our national security interests in grave danger, risking every american life in the name of saving an animal that could be easily saved any number of ways, seems a bit short sighted, even myopic to me…

Press reports read like the entire nation was about to have a meltdown when gas hit $3.00 a gallon. Imagine what the headlines will read when you can’t buy a gallon of gas at any price? The spotted owl and the caribou may be fine, but putting food on your families table and keeping the lights turned on will become an impossible task for many americans. Even wealthy americans will find themselves living in a state of complete anarchy that no amount of money can protect them from.

Personally, I don’t believe oil had much if anything to do with our government’s decision to remove the Hussein regime from power in Iraq. If it did, we would have invaded instead of liberated, and conquered instead of handing the keys to the oil industry over to the new interim Iraqi government. This option existed of course and the fact that we didn’t exercise this option indicates that oil was not as high on the priority list as some suggest.

But if oil had been the reasoning behind freeing the Iraqi people from the most brutal regime in modern history, it would have been a good one, certainly a valid reason consistent with our national security interests.

In case you missed it, the scenes from New Orleans provided a sobering glimpse into just how close to anarchy we all live in america. If you were busy at your war protest, or at the save a whale reunion, some hug-a-tree networking convention or your green peace weekend get-a-way, you might have missed the footage of americans raping and killing americans in the BIG EaSY only hours after a storm hit.

We learned that when some americans feel their next meal is at risk, big screen TVs and new Nike shoes are important commodities and looting them from your neighbors fast becomes an acceptable survival technique.

Brilliant environmentalists who have placed the wellbeing of seals and trees ahead of human beings may soon face the consequences of their ill fated logic and so will all of us who tolerated their nonsense for too long.

Despite statements to the contrary from the director of the National Hurricane Center, world renowned authority on global warming and national security expert Barbra Streisand is declaring a "global warming emergency." Based on the well known fact that earth was once a huge chunk of ice, who am I to say she’s nuts?

However, as is always the case, there is another side of the story with a very different view. as if you couldn’t figure out how important our tight oil supply is from the two storms that shut down nearly a third of our refinery output, “Before the Oil Runs Out ” should help put things in better perspective.

The simple fact is oil is the life blood of the american economy and at the epicenter of our national security interests. Even the world’s most powerful technologically advanced military will be impotent without the energy resources needed to keep it operating at full efficiency. So in the end, few things are as important to our national security.

Yet folks like Spotted al Gore and Barbara Streisand have great difficulty comprehending what life in america might be like without an effective energy policy, specifically, the need for america to secure its own strategic energy independence.

Though most of the liberal anti-energy coalition lives on the left coast where brown-outs and rolling black-outs are the order of the day, these folks still make no mental connection between their extreme environmental policies and the fact that they live in the one state that consistently lacks the necessary energy supply to operate, not to mention the highest energy prices in the nation. as my six year old daughter would say, “If it had been a snake, it would have bitten them”.

Yet today’s liberals continue to get it irresponsibly wrong.

If america does not begin to ignore the fanatical rantings of the environmentalist left, we will soon see scenes like New Orleans played out in cities across this country and much worse. america must find a way to become more energy independent and we can no longer afford to tolerate the mindless drivel from those in america who are more concerned with anti-american protests than the wellbeing of the american economy, the people it feeds or the military it fuels.

Oil and national security are inseparable. Those who understand this must learn to ignore those who just don’t get it… or prepare to accept the inevitable consequences of tolerating their nonsense.
