Canadian-born actress Mary Pickford known forever as “america's Sweetheart” must be rolling in her grave, and Charlie Chaplin wouldn't be laughing.

according to Reuters, “U.S. movie superstar Tom Cruise and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. are resurrecting United artists, the movie studio founded more than 80 years ago by screen legends including Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford, MGM said on Thursday.

“Cruise will star in and produce films for the studio, and production partner Paula Wagner will serve as chief executive.

“Cruise and Wagner will set the company's production slate from development to production greenlighting ability, subject to certain parameters, MGM said.”

Back in august it was rumored that the temperamental Cruise was on the hunt to find backers for a new studio.

“From MSNBC: “after the Top Gun star was dropped by Paramount, he was shopping around for financiers, and a source reports that top execs at the Church of Scientology said that the group would fund his films if no other backers stepped forward.” (www.tomcruiseisnuts.com). “The talks ended when a group led by Washington Redskins owner Daniel M. Snyder reached a two-year financing deal with Cruise. a spokeswoman for Cruise's production company, Cruise-Wagner, labels the story “completely untrue” and a representative for the Church of Scientology didn't respond to the Scoop's requests for comment.”

Cruise is a sworn apostle of L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. Hubbard's Internet homepage states that Scientology is “the fastest-growing religion in the world today”.

Cruise takes his religion seriously and verbally flips the bird to anyone who denounces Scientology.

according to RadarMagaine.com, before Cruise started dating Katie Holmes, he allegedly invited actress Scarlett Johansson to a Scientology center where he showed her literature about the church. “after two hours of proselytizing, according to the website, “Cruise opened a door to reveal a second room full of upper-level Scientologists who had been waiting to dine with the pair, at which point the cool-headed ingnue politely excused herself.”

In 1997, Cruise and other big time entertainers took out an international newspaper ad denouncing Germany for resorting to the same totalitarian tactics against Scientologists that the country used against the Jews under Hitler during the 1930s.

United artists was actually founded by Pickford along with Chaplain, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffiths.

“If you have made mistakes, even serious ones, there is always another chance for you. What we call failure is not the falling down but the staying down,” Pickford once said.

In the days when “america's Sweetheart” tossed her magnificent curls, Scientology would have been considered a cult.

america's Sweetheart is an icon who was a catalyst in starting the Hollywood we know today. as a legend of the silver screen, she will never be forgotten. astute in the world of business, Mary Pickfotd was a success in an era where female entrepreneurs were rare indeed.

During World War 1, the star was responsible for raising millions of dollars in war bonds to help the U.S. She had been a citizen of the U.S., while still maintaining her Canadian citizenship.

a proud Christian, who published a religious book, Why Not Try God? in 1934, Pickford would hardly have forseen that the future would usher in anti-Christian times.

america's Sweetheart would never have wanted “Top Gun” to resurrect her studio.
