Universal life force

Pelosi's "got the force"

By Judi McLeod

Tuesday, December 19, 2006

apostles of the "universal life force" are on a roll in Washington.

"She's got the force," say fans of US House Speaker elect Nancy Pelosi.

and she had it long before legions of caterers and florists started plans for the four-day installation party of pomp that will leave everyone in Washington, if not the watching world, ga-ga.

Last Valentine's Day, George Lucas was Pelosi's posy and chocolate heart.

That's the day when Lucas, dubbed "the bearded sage of the Star Wars universe" by Jeff Dufour of the Hill, made a rare appearance alongside Pelosi and House Democrats; the very day when Pelosi announced, "For america to be number one, timing is everything."

already moving on up, `Darth Nancy' enjoyed every second of it.

"Lucas's appearance proves that "the Force is with House Democrats" this year, Pelosi spokeswoman Jennifer Crider said before adding that "Democrats" might be more appropriate because "our Senate colleagues are doing very well, too."" (www.hillnews.com, Feb. 14, 2006).

Fate was to prove her right less than one year later during mid-term elections. Crider could safely give up her day job for gypsy earrings and a crystal ball.

No Jacqueline Kennedy in a pillbox hat, Pelosi the first female speaker of the House has matrons calling jewelers for her signature multicolor strands of South Sea Tahitian pearls.

Grannies are hot, Republicans are not. One Palm Springs newspaper asked in a headline: "Hot to Get the Nancy Pelosi Look." (answer: Betty Davis eyes).

`Darth Nancy' is getting ready to wow Washington with her designer ball gown for the 3,000-seat black-tie dinner and concert at the National Building Museum near Capitol Hill. Lucas, not doing badly as this year's Rose Parade Grand Marshal, will undoubtedly be clinking the champagne flute of San Francisco's best known Nanny, Nanny and friends will be celebrating to the background music of crooner Tony Bennett singing, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco."

That's just for sentiment since there will be scheduled performances by Carole King and the laid-back icon of the `60s, Jimmy Buffett. all the Hollywood swells, including Warren Beatty and annette Benning, will add the star power.

Incidentally, Craig Middleton, executive director of the Presidio Trust, will also be there. Pelosi's's life, every facet from licking envelopes to becoming Princess will be on parade and it was early in her House career, that she was armani suit-clad mover and shaker in creating the trust at the former army base turned into a national park.

But no one can outshine Lucas in Pelosi's eyes.

Lucas, who doesn't hide his Democratic leanings, has been critical of Republican administrations going back to Nixon. On Valentine's Day, he even went so far as to inject--to the consternation of some fans--some unmistakable commentary on current events in his recent series of Star Wars films.

Lucas joined Pelosi, Reps. George Miller (Calif.), Hilda Solis (Calif.) and Kendrick Meek (Fla.), and more than 100 college students "to discuss the need to create a new generation of innovators that reflects the diversity of our country."

"The parallels between what we did in Vietnam and what we are doing now in Iraq, are unbelievable," Lucas said at the 2005 Cannes Festival.

Crider said Pelosi and Lucas have known each other for a long time, as Lucas's company is based in her district.

No doubt that the San Francisco Presidio, where Lucasfilms can now boast its $350-million headquarters, is part of Pelosi's district.

The launch party for the film company's breathtaking new digs, sponsored by Lucas himself, was referred to by Pelosi as a "wedding".

Then in March, the World affairs Council in a San Francisco hotel ballroom honoured Lucas with a Global Vision award.

Pelosi, who presented him with his council award, likened Lucas to renowned classical music composer Wolfgang amadeus Mozart.

"Like Mozart, George Lucas is no ordinary genius," Pelosi said. "He is a magician. He will be remembered as a legend."

Meanwhile, while the rest of us get through the Season of miracles by December 31st, Pelosi will be just getting into hers on the Tuesday after New Year's Day.
