1 June 2006 Lodi, California ice cream vendor Umer HaYaT, 48, will be serving scoops with sprinkles this summer rather than serving time. On Wednesday, the father of Hamid HaYaT, convicted of supporting terrorism by attending an Islamic training camp in Pakistan in 2003 and then lying to the FBI about it, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge yesterday of simply trying to smuggle $28,000 of ice cream proceeds from the country in 2003 . His first trial ended in april when the jury deadlocked and was to be retried on the same charges Monday, but chose to take the plea offer. His plea allowed him to avoid jail with time served.

This case also involved Shabbir aHMED, the imam of the Lodi Mosque and Muhammed adil Khan, the former imam. Both men were deported for immigration violations.

Umer's son Hamid HaYaT, 23, faces at least 30 years in prison when he is sentenced July 14 for his attendance and participation at an Islamic terrorist training camp.
