Wednesday, May 24, 2006Ontario Egg farmer, Shawn Carmichael is now facing and shouldering the cost of justice: It is a burden no common man can be expected to carry, and the consequence weighs heavy on all of us.
At a demonstration at the Canadian Food Inspection Offices (CFIA) on May 1, 2006 Shawn Carmichael was viscously attacked by security guards, and required medical attention as a result of the beating. Shawn and his lawyer Judith Wilcox (613-525-5586) met with Ottawa police (detective Doug Edgar 613-236-1222 x 2224) May 19, 2006 to discuss the assault. After reviewing the surveillance video tapes, Detective Edgar confirmed an assault took place, but refused to lay charges.
Judith Wilcox asserted that she could force the charges to be laid, however the legal costs to mount such an effort would be significant and prohibitive.
I call on the Ministers of Agriculture and Public Safety to release these video surveillance tapes to the media immediately. Furthermore, that a complete investigation into the facts surrounding this assault be undertaken by the RCMP, and the results be made public. In addition, that the people responsible for ordering or allowing this assault to be suspended without pay, pending the outcome of the investigation.
