Peacekeeping and stabilization missions

Building the U.N. at U.S. Expense

The same political party that wants to withdraw from Iraq is proposing another 100,000 troops for the U.S. military. What's going on here? It's simple: the troops are going to be deployed on behalf of the United Nations.

The Democratic Party house organ, the New York Times, in a November 19 editorial, declared: "Even assuming an early exit from Iraq, the army's overall authorized strength needs to be increased some 75,000 to 100,000 troops more than Mr. Rumsfeld had in mind for the next few years." What for? The Times goes on: "a force totaling 575,000 would permit the creation of two new divisions for peacekeeping and stabilization missions, a doubling of special operations forces and the addition of 10,000 to the military police to train and supplement local police forces."  (emphasis added). The terms "peacekeeping " and "stabilization" are euphemisms for U.N.-authorized military operations.

This kind of thinking reflects the influence of the Third Way, a group of "progressives" involved in the national Democratic Party. This  group supports the United States army Relief act, a bill introduced by Senators Joe Lieberman, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Bill Nelson and Jack Reed, along with Representatives Ellen Tauscher and Mark Udall. It urges another 100,000 troops.

Liberals have frequently complained about the U.S. providing "few troops" to United Nations  peacekeeping operations.

In this context, Representatives albert Wynn (D-MD) and Jim Leach (R-Ia) introduced a bill to create a United Nations Emergency Peace Service. The measure has only eight co-sponsors, but one of them, Leach, a liberal Republican defeated for re-election, has been offered up as a replacement for John Bolton as U.S. ambassador to the U.N.

according to aP, a letter urging the nomination of Leach has been sent by Democratic Rep. Earl Blumenauer and Republican Rep. Jim Walsh.

Leach was a featured attraction at the recent national conference of Citizens for Global Solutions, the group that used to be known as the World Federalist association, which backs global taxes and world government.

anti-Bolton activist Steve Clemons is also suggesting defeated liberal "Republican" Senator Lincoln Chafee as a possible Bolton replacement.
