Canada's Reaction to Muslim Riots

MacKay's short of the mark

by Klaus Rohrich

Peter MacKay, Canada's newborn Minister of Foreign affairs, was totally gutless in his response to the riots, killing and calls for jihad by Muslims in response to some cartoons purporting to depict the Prophet Mohammed. The sentiments he expressed are somewhat less than stellar and sound suspiciously like something former Liberal foreign affairs Minister Bill Graham might have said. MacKay's call for "a better understanding of Islam and of Muslim communities" in the face of massive rioting and vandalism is yet another of those wimpy Nancy-boy responses that has caused the West to lose all self-respect.

I would have expected a more resolute statement from MacKay, given all the known facts surrounding these incidents, rather than a gross capitulation of our principles to appease some fundamentalist Islamic nut bars that will not be happy until Western civilization is destroyed.

In case MacKay hadn't had time to familiarize himself with the facts of the case, the cartoons in question were published well over four months ago. While they brought about a minor disturbance in a Danish shopping centre, the story would have ended then and there had it not been for radical imam abdel Rahman abu Laban, who took the cartoons on tour to the Middle East. What's apparently not common knowledge, due to the former mainstream media's squeamishness in telling the truth about Muslims, is that abu Laban added three really offensive cartoons to his traveling collection and claimed that they also ran in the Danish Newspaper Jyllands-Posten.

I am frankly offended that Mackay would have such a cottage cheese response to behavior that would not be tolerated from any other religious group. If Jews took to the streets protesting and rioting over the blood-libel that is a daily staple fed to arab Muslim masses, they would be soundly rebuked and Mackay wouldn't be calling "for a better understanding of Judaism". In fact, I'm sure his words would be clear and unmistakable in condemnation.

It's not surprising that many Muslims hate the West, given that we do not hold our own values dear enough to defend them. Mr. Mackay said that individuals must act responsibly in exercising their constitutional rights. I assume that by "responsibly" he means we must take care not to offend others. We need to remind Mr. MacKay that this is indeed a two-way street. Many in the West were offended by the Muslim demonstrators attacking French, German or austrian Embassies. None of these countries has done anything overtly offensive to Islam. On the contrary, EU countries are bending over backwards to accommodate their immigrant population. Demonstrators in London's Knightsbridge district carried placards that said "Europe- your 9/11 is coming." Does this mean Muslims are finally admitting that the World Trade Center attack was not the work of Jews, as so many Muslims have claimed?

In an interview with Fox News's Jonathan Hunt, abu Laban called for a new set of rules for the way that Western Europeans lived. In other words, he wants Sharia to govern the behavior of Europeans.

If Mr. MacKay is to effectively represent the interests of Canada, he must ensure that behavior such as that being demonstrated by Muslims around the world is condemned. When Canada hopped onto the multicultural bandwagon, I don't think that anyone foresaw that medieval governance, mob rule and anti-Semitic hate mongering would become an accepted Canadian value. as such, Mr. MacKay fell far short of the mark in his statement about the rioting.
