Liberals, Conservatives, racists, bigots

The law is colorblind

Liberals have a really cute trick they like to play when arguing with conservatives. When they're pushed to the wall and cannot continue to argue rationally, they like to accuse their opponents of being racists. It's a wonderful way to get the opposition to shut up, as no one wants to be labeled as a bigot.

and so it is with the current immigration debate. For some reason, liberals seem to be unable to wrap their gnarled little minds around the concept of something being right or wrong or legal or illegal. That's why you hear the argument that human beings are not illegal. That's true, as Joseph Klein pointed out in these pages earlier, but human beings can and do engage in illegal acts. and that's what's at the center of this whole debate. Liberals seem to think that the immigration concerns now sweeping the U.S. have to do with the fact that the majority of those that are crossing the border illegally are of a darker color than some of the previous waves of immigrants that landed in the U.S. But the truth is that it isn't about being darker than the Irish. It's about entering the country illegally. Which part of illegal do liberals not understand?

In a cynical effort to bolster their own sagging political fortunes liberal Democrats like Chuck Schumer, Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton are demagoguing the issue by fanning the flames of hatred against those who want to insist that immigrants enter the U.S. legally. Hillary is particularly hypocritical in that following 9/11 she harangued the Republican leadership to make the borders more secure and most recently she stood four-square against Dubai Ports World's purchase of some shipping terminals in the U.S. because Dubai Ports World is, wait for it...arab owned!

Let's put this into perspective. all laws, including immigration laws, are passed to ensure that affairs are conducted according to rules. These rules apply equally to everyone, regardless of color. and no amount of shouting "racism" is going to change that fact.

Flight 77, the one that plowed into the pentagon on 9/11, was commandeered by four hijackers who were in the U.S. illegally. according to Michelle Malkin one Luis Martinez-Flores, assisted two of the four future hijackers, Hani Hanjour and Khalid almihdhar, with fake ID and they in turn procured fake IDs for two other fellow terrorists.

My suggestion is that if liberals want to have anyone come into the country at any time without legal documentation, they should work to change the laws to accommodate those people they believe deserve to be allowed to enter without going through the proper channels. But taking to the streets in protest and attempting to turn the issue into a "civil rights" matter is nothing more than a red herring designed to obfuscate the real issues which are about following the law. Period.

It has been said repeatedly that the United States is a nation of immigrants and that immigration is an important part of this country's growth and development. It will continue to be that way, especially in light of the declining birthrates facing most industrialized countries today. However, that doesn't mean those who find them inconvenient can ignore the laws. after all, if over 100 million immigrants came to the U.S. legally over the past 100 years, why should the 12 or so million that are here illegally now be granted amnesty? Is it because the number is too daunting and the system can't handle it? Or is it because making them apply for permanent resident status in the same way everyone else has had to apply is racist?

The idea of granting 12 million people who have broken the law in america by entering the country illegally a blanket amnesty is bizarre in the extreme. By extrapolation should we then grant amnesty to people who have broken other laws because they are poor or dark skinned? Should we let bank robbers go because they were poor? What about letting murderers go free because their skin color is darker? If we begin heading in that direction, then the law will not apply equally to everyone and we will cease to be a democracy.

Most other countries in the world insist that their immigration laws be obeyed. Mexico is among those nations with a very stringent immigration policy. anyone found to be illegally at large in Mexico will be summarily arrested and deported or thrown in jail. Why is it that liberals never decry Mexico's immigration laws as being racist? Could it be that there's no political hay to be made in doing so?

The beauty of our system is that our laws are designed to be applied equally to everyone, regardless of race, creed or national origin. and while liberals like Hillary & friends would like to change the laws to suit their political ends, it is important that we insist on the law continuing to be color blind.
