Murders, Murderers

Citytv defends alleged killer mom

On March 2, police went to a Markham Ontario home where they discovered 30-year-old Sivananthi Elango and her 2 daughters, aged 2 years and 3 months, in the bathtub. The three were rushed to hospital, where the toddler and the infant were pronounced dead. Elango was admitted in critical condition, since upgraded to serious, with self inflicted stab wounds. Police were satisfied that they had sufficient evidence of planning and deliberation and Elango was later charged with two counts of first degree murder. Upon conviction she would be sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

It only took Toronto's Citytv a couple of days to raise Sivananthi Elango's defense--she suffered postpartum depression. Experts in the field were interviewed and the subject was covered in depth; or as in depth as City ever covers anything. The station just couldn't wait to attempt to justify the horrific crime while there were no facts (you know, those things that news stories are supposed to report) to support that this particular woman was suffering from postpartum depression at the time she allegedly killed her children. Elango's youngest victim was 3 months old and she may well have been suffering from that condition; but at the time that Citytv did their story, it was speculation at best. and there is something absurd about raising a defense for an accused before Elango had even made her first appearance in court on the charges. The approach that Citytv took was nothing more than feminist political correctness run amok.

Searches of Lexis-Nexis and Google News revealed that in the five days following the March 2 deaths, only one other source linked postpartum depression with Sivananthi Elango. CTV reporter Peter Murphy told anchor Sandie Rinaldo that postpartum depression was “a possibility” that the police were looking into. a possibility; that is far different than mentioning the murder and then going into a lengthy discussion of postpartum depression, including listing all of the symptoms that as far as we know, Elango may or may not have had.

Three days after the discovery in the Markham home, 41-year-old Wendy LaFleche, her 7-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son were found murdered in their aurora Ontario home. They had all been killed in their sleep. Shortly after their bodies were discovered, LaFleche's estranged husband was arrested near Barrie after leading police on a high speed pursuit. It's difficult to understand what would make a man shoot his family, especially his innocent children in cold blood, but don't look for the Citytv feminists to try and explain away his brutal act. Only women get that type of treatment. Women who kill must be sick while men who violently kill their offspring are simply evil and violent. It might be nice to hear from experts about what might have caused LaFleche to kill his children but we won't be seeing that on Citytv.

Citytv should be required viewing for all those Canadians who still have difficulty understanding how a blonde and attractive 23-year-old Karla Homolka only got 12 years for accidentally killing her 15-year-old sister while giving her to her husband as a Christmas present and for the torture, rape and killing of Lesley Mahaffy and Kristen French.
