CBS News, Katie Couric

Getting Ready For "Katiebowl"

By Nathan Tabor

Thursday, September 7, 2006

I can't exactly remember the last time I watched the CBS Evening News. It might have been sometime during the infamous "Memogate" fiasco, the resulting being the heave-ho of Dan Rather. after Dan's departure, the chair behind the anchor desk at CBS was kept warm for 18 months by veteran news broadcaster Bob Schieffer. Bob filled in ably, playing the role of transitional broadcaster while questioning whether or not Dick Cheney was a liability to the administration after Cheney's shooting of a friend during a hunting accident, chastised top generals to "stop blaming the media" for negative coverage of the Iraq war, and added to the Plamegate nonsense by opining that "...two years and millions of tax dollars later, the president's trusted friend and strategist Karl Rove has emerged as the top suspect." as I said, Schieffer "ably" filled in -- as the resident liberal Drive-By media guy.

But now we can put all of this behind us. Katie Couric has taken over as the FIRST sole FEMaLE anchor at CBS Evening News. Somewhere in the CBS press releases that have been pouring out of their Manhattan office was a word that almost took my breath away. Did you know that Katie's ascension to the CBS news throne is "HISTORICaL"?

With that in mind, and with her first appearance on network television as heir to the Murrow/Edwards/Cronkite/Rather legacies, the Superbowl came to mind, maybe after I watched CBS plugging her upcoming show near the end of the CBS broadcast of the PGa tournament, a few weeks ago. after all, millions watch the yearly football spectacle -- millions will be watching the Katiebowl. and like the Superbowl, my wife suggested we have our own Katiebowl party with snacks, beverages and a Katiebowl main course. So as the clock ticks down to the kick-off of a new era at CBS, we're enjoying a wide variety of foods and drink. Here's just a smattering;

Sweet Katie Lemonade -- Like the perky one, this fresh-squeezed delight is so sugary sweet, but every once in a while, I noticed a bit of sourness between sips.

Negative Calorie Cake -- This is a tasty treat that I think all the ladies will enjoy. I'm not big on cakes but my wife had two pieces and somehow dropped two dress sizes in the blink of an eye, just like Katie. /p>

Katie's Buffalo Legs -- Better than traditional wings all smothered in hot sauce, these lightly-browned legs are touched with just a kiss of oil. Men seemed to really like these.

Whoops! Gotta run the dishes to the kitchen. Here comes "the perky one." Well...maybe one more leg. They're so good!
