Like New York Senator Hillary Clinton, Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold has been busy the last few years trying to establish a more moderate public image, sometimes distancing himself from the far left extreme base in control of today's Democratic Party, often working with folks across the aisle like arizona Senator John McCain, who have already established themselves as world class RINOs, (Republican In Name Only).
as the 2006 mid-term elections draw near, and Feingold begins to set his sights on a Presidential run in 2008, he must find a way to re-connect with that left-wing base if he hopes to have even a snowball's chance in a Presidential bid. It would also help better align him as a potential VP choice in a Hillary bid for the White House.
But the eager beaver from Wisconsin may have stepped too far out on the political rhetoric limb in his recent senate proposal to censure President Bush for his alleged illegal wiretap program operated by the NSa. It's no surprise his proposal is drawing fire from both conservatives and moderates across the aisle. But even power-starved left-wingers in his own camp are running from this proposal, smart enough to realize that most americans (even a few liberals) know the difference between illegally wiretapping innocent americans and normal intelligence operations aimed at tracking and capturing terrorists and would be bombers currently enjoying american freedoms and liberties.
asked at a news conference whether he would vote for the censure resolution, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada declined to endorse it. Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., said he had not read it either and wasn't inclined simply to scold the president. "I'd prefer to see us solve the problem," Lieberman told reporters. What a concept, solving a potential problem versus exploiting every problem, even where no problem exists…
Feingold's resolution drew empathy but no outright support from Democratic Leaders like Nancy Pelosi across the hall either.
"a formal censure by Congress is an appropriate and responsible first step to assure the public that when the president thinks he can violate the law without consequences, Congress has the will to hold him accountable," Feingold said in prepared remarks. a clear oversight of the fact that no laws have been broken, no innocent americans have been "spied" on, and Bush has not only a right, but a responsibility to use all legal available means to track terrorists here and abroad…
The censure resolution reads: "Resolved that the United States Senate does hereby censure George W. Bush, president of the United States, and does condemn his unlawful authorization of wiretaps of americans within the United States without obtaining the court orders required."
The most disturbing part of this nonsense is the notion that would-be terrorists currently plotting and planning the next 9/11 from the comfort of a US residence, would qualify as "innocent americans", or americans of any sort for that matter. a great example of just how delusional and perverted the progressive logic really is…not to mention dangerous.
Throwing down the gauntlet, VP Dick Cheney said, "The outrageous proposition that we ought to protect our enemies' ability to communicate as it plots against america poses a key test of our Democratic leaders." "Do they support the extreme and counterproductive antics of a few or do they support a lawful program vital to the security of this nation?" he added…noting, "The american people already made their decision, they agree with the president."
That they have… and just as Cheney suggests, most americans support the idea that the President has a very real responsibility to use our intelligence agencies to track would-be killers, especially if they are already on american soil, and we know they are. The very idea that we would not use all available intelligence resources to trace communications between al Qaeda cells operating abroad, and al Qaeda cells or sympathizers operating here, is insane. But then, have we not come to expect insanity from the left-wing nuts among us? Including those who unfortunately fooled local constituents into electing them to national office.
Likewise, the notion that such a program would be vetted through known enemy sympathizers like Sen. Rockefeller and several others is also insane. Rockefeller traveled to Syria with Top Secret security information a month after 9/11, for the sole purpose of warning our enemies of our not-so-secret plans regarding Iraq. Regime change in Iraq was the established US policy on Iraq long before Bush ever took office. But Rockefeller sensed that Bush would actually act on that policy, and he used his position on the Senate Intelligence Committee to become an enemy informant, plain and simple. So keeping Top Secret information secret in that committee had already been proven impossible.
Now, many ill-informed average americans are largely unaware of these and many other facts. But people like Feingold are very much aware, which is to say, efforts like this censure proposal by Feingold are outright overt attempts to intentionally mislead the public. They are not just getting it wrong--they are intentionally creating or perpetuating an outright lie.
That's why democrats are now and must remain far from any political power. Despite their "culture of corruption" campaign mantra targeting Republicans, most americans can see with their own eyes, the "culture of deceit and destruction" which consumes today's DNC.
MoveOn.org and Hollyweird types will, of course embrace and rally behind the lie. But already, people even on the left, with a reluctant minimal knowledge of reality and an uncomfortable ounce of common sense, are running from Feingold's proposed resolution like it's laced with the black plague.
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said: "Senator Feingold's time would be better spent putting forth constructive ideas rather than using cheap political tricks that compromise america's national security by sending a dangerous signal of disunity around the globe."
Feingold stood alone in the senate to oppose the 2001 Patriot act. Two weeks ago, he and only three other senators opposed a renewal of the law, even with new curbs on police powers.
all of Feingold's recent leaps to the left will undoubtedly win him favor among left-wing wackos from sea to shining sea. But that number is shrinking not growing and it has never been more than an insignificant nutty few anyway.
His efforts will gain the support of the far left. However, the absence of the sheep's clothing once again, reveals the wolf beneath…. If americans can't agree on this, they can't agree on anything!
