Terror in North America

Foiled Terrorist attack at JFK one year to the day after foiled attack in Toronto

What is significant about June 2?

Today three people were arrested and one other person was being sought in connection to a plot to blow up jet-fuel lines at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

"Four people have been charged. Three suspects are in custody: Russell Defreitas, Kareem Ibrihim and Abdul Kadir. Another suspect, Abdul Nur is still at large." (www.wnbc.com).

That's June 2, 2007.

On June 2, 2006 a terrorist attack was foiled in Toronto.

Members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and partners of the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team arrested 17 adults--all Canadian residents, and some Canadian born--and charged them under Section 83 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The suspected terrorists had planned to make a number of landmarks in Southern Ontario their targets and planned to behead Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

U.S. Attorney, Roslynn R. Mauskopf called today's foiled attack "one of the most chilling plots imaginable."

"The devastation that would be caused had this plot succeeded is just unthinkable," she said at a news conference.

Sources said the plot involved a plan to blow up a Buckeye jet-fuel pipeline at JFK setting off a potential massive explosive. Buckeye provides fuel to all three New York City airports.

The suspected terrorists in Toronto were described by authorities as "inspired by al Qaeda.

"This group took steps to acquire three tones of ammonium nitrate and other components necessary to create explosive devices," said Assistant Commissioner Mike McDonnell. "To put this in context, the 1995 bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City that killed 168 people took one tonne of ammonium nitrate."

Of the 17 arrested, five were Young Offenders. Another one later arrested was released on bail.

Currently four are out on bail and one charge was dropped.

At press time, no media had made the distinction of two terrorists attacks being foiled on the same day one year apart.
