Toronto, Ontario. – Doug Ford's PC Government has vowed to modernize Ontario's alcohol market by allowing for alcohol sales in corner stores. Recently, reports have emerged estimating that Ontario could be on the hook for up to $1 billion in damages if it were to expand alcohol sales, specifically as a result of violating the contract signed with The Beer Store.
David Clement, Toronto based North American Affairs Manager of the Consumer Choice Center (CCC), said "Doug Ford shouldn't bend to the threats of The Beer Store. Expanding alcohol sales is a huge win for Ontarians province-wide." "It is important for Ontarians to know that these figures being tossed around regarding damages are mostly unsubstantiated, and would have to be backed up by evidence to have any weight. It looks like The Beer Store is simply trying to threaten its way by inflating figures so that it can maintain its crony control of beer sales in the province," said Clement. "This tactic from The Beer Store represents cronyism run amuck. They are now playing a game of chicken with the Ontario government to protect their prohibition-era selective benefits. The Ontario government shouldn't bend to these threats and should proceed with expanded retail options that benefit alcohol consumers. The Beer Store knows that Ontarians want more consumer choice, and is bluffing with these threats. Doug Ford should call their bluff to prove they have no leg to stand on," said Clement.
