October 2019 - A Decisive Political Crossroads

Andrew Schher, Justin Trudeau, Maxime BernierI keep track of political developments by following the news, and by getting a good feeling for popular opinion through the newspaper comments beneath both news and opinion items and the letters-to-the-editor. People are more likely to say what they really think when they can feel anonymous by using false names! Justin Trudeau supporters are few and far between in such forums, which are provided by the Toronto Sun and the National Post but not the Toronto Star, and a major debating point by far is that "a vote for Bernier is a vote for Trudeau".

Little meaningful difference between Andrew Scheer and Justin Trudeau

This discord is of great concern to me, as in my opinion there is little meaningful difference between Andrew Scheer and Justin Trudeau in that both are committed to flooding Canada with massive numbers of third-world immigrants. Trudeau's target was 310,000 in 2018, rising to 330,000 this year and 340,000 next year - that's around one million in just three years. Scheer quite probably means it when he says that he will put a stop to "illegals" crossing into Quebec, and he has said that the UN's Global Compact on Migration is a threat to Canada's national sovereignty as "it gives influence over Canada's immigration system to foreign entities". Nonetheless, the Conservatives have mentioned "legal" immigration figures as high as 280,000 per year in the recent past, less than Trudeau but still totally unacceptable. I find it impossible to vote for either one of them, and I am always mindful that both parties import "voting blocs" which will reliably give their electoral support to the party which allowed them in, sticking us common plebes with the welfare, housing and health-care tabs for all of them. This sits very badly with immigrants such as myself. We had to speak English or French, have a suitable education, and be willing to work. I was told that if I ended up in court or showed up at the welfare office, I would be deported. I qualified for an "assisted passage" which meant that my air travel was subsidised and I was allowed extra baggage for "settler's effects". I had to repay the assisted passage, and found a job within a month and then paid every possible penny I could each payday until I had discharged the full amount. Then I had my passport endorsed so I could leave without any hassles if I didn't like it here.

Allowing massive immigration into an advanced welfare state is a recipe for disaster

Allowing massive immigration into an advanced welfare state is a recipe for disaster, and it is little wonder that "refugees" will risk their lives in leaky boats to reach a country where not working pays far, far better than working in their own country does. I have no intention whatsoever of voting for Tweedledumb or Tweedledumber. I want a genuinely conservative party to vote for, and for the first time in a long time, with the rise of "Mad Max" Bernier and his People's Party of Canada, we now have one. What a tragedy it was that Max didn't quite beat Andrew Scheer in the race for leader of the Conservative Party; Bernier was edged out on the 13th ballot by 50.95 per cent of the vote to 49.05 per cent , after having led in the first 12 ballots. We were so close to having a united conservative party with a genuinely conservative leader, but now a mushy-middle enforcer for political correctness has seized the Conservative flag and it will be hard to get rid of him for at least four years.

I, for one, refuse to vote for Trudeau-Lite

I, for one, refuse to vote for Trudeau-Lite, and I will put every effort I can into helping Bernier score as many votes as possible. And if that costs Scheer a majority too bad, I don't want someone like him with a majority government anyway. Let's start the move to genuine conservatism now, rather than continue with the same-old same-old in four-year chunks until our eventual demise. This time around we should aim for a Conservative minority government beholden to the People's Party to remain in power, and then build on that in preparation for the next election four years from now. Let's do the best we can starting immediately, and work for a better future two or three elections down the road. If we don't offer a genuine in-your-face alternative to Andrew Scheer right now, the longer and more painful it will be. For far too many years we have been asked to choose between two parties, neither of which will truly represent the wishes of the people. It's time to stand up and be counted.
