For the climate change cultists who have been banking on climate system collapse and a rescue by global scientists, these are indeed depressing times.
What really has been frustrating the climate alarmists is the Arctic, which many 'experts' promised 10 years age that the late summer Arctic ice would be gone by now. Data from the Danish Meteorological Institute shows that nothing of this sort is happening. 1
Modern Arctic temperatures haven't risen in 80 years. They are no warmer today than they were in the 1930s. Greenland was actually much warmer during the 1920s and 1930s than in recent decades. 2
A recent study shows today's Arctic sea ice cover is still quite extensive when compared to the last several thousand years when CO2 concentrations ranged between 260 and 270 ppm. A reconstruction of Arctic (NW Greenland) sea ice cover reveals modern day sea ice is present multiple months longer than almost any time in the last 8,000 years, and today's summer sea surface temperature's are among the coldest of the Holocene. 3
Other new Arctic sea ice reconstructions from the north of Iceland indicate that modern sea ice extent has changed very little in the last several hundred years, or since the Little Ice Age and also that the Early Holocene had millennial-scale periods of sea-ice-free and open water conditions, which is in stark contrast to 'modern conditions'- the 'highest value' or furthest extent of the sea ice record. 4
Biomarker evidence for Arctic region sea ice coverage in the northern Barents sea indicates the most extensive sea ice conditions of the last 9,500 years occurred during the 20th century. In contrast, this region was ice free with open water conditions during the Early Holocene (9,500 to 5,800 years ago). 5
Zhokhov Island in the Siberian High Arctic today exhibits inhospitably severe climate conditions, desolate tundra, and year-round pack ice in the surrounding sea. During the Early Holocene this same island was warm enough to host waterfowl species, birch trees, and year-round human residents who hunted polar bear and reindeer.6
A look at the real observed Arctic data on polar sea ice shows that the situation has been surprisingly stable for more than one decade, now, despite the cult-like doomsday prophecies that much more ice would be gone by now. 1
Extending the sea ice record back centuries, also shows that there is nothing unusual about the recent Arctic sea ice extent changes.
Greenland
For over 40 years (1961-2002), the Greenland ice sheet cooled, thickened, and gained mass just as anthropogenic CO2 emissions were sharply rising. 7
Regional (northwest Greenland) sea surface temperatures were about 2 degrees C warmer than at present for most of the last 6,000 to 8,000 years.
Antarctica
Historical monitoring records showed the Antarctic sea levels in the early 1900s were in fact similar to today. Apparently, this was a surprising finding for those who assume anthropogenic greenhouse gases largely determine net change in polar sea ice. 8
NASA published a study showing that overall Antarctic ice increased by 112 billion tons per year between 1992 and 2001 and increased by 82 billion tons per year between 2003 and 2008. NASA scientists concluded that increasing Antarctic ice is decreasing world sea level.9
In spite of all this information, in recent years climate change warriors have ignored the data and decided they could cross the polar waters. Since 2017, at least six ships have gotten stuck in the Arctic and one in Antarctica. 10
