Obama's disastrous policies in Egypt

Cruz Blast’s Obama’s Egypt Policy

Texas Senator Ted Cruz spoke the truth, as usual about Obama's disastrous policies in Egypt, attacking the president's position on the Muslim Brotherhood as "one of the most stunning diplomatic failures in recent memory."

In an op-ed piece in Foreign Policy magazine, Cruz points out that the rage of many people in the streets of Cairo is not reserved for the Muslim Brotherhood alone. Sure, they hate Morsi. But, Cruz writes, they were also carrying signs with slogans saying 'Obama Supports Terrorism' and 'Obama Supports Morsi'. There were pictures of American Ambassador to Egypt, Anne Patterson, with a large red X across her face. Cruz believes that by throwing his support to the Brotherhood, Obama has alienated potential allies in the region and made the United States an entrenched ally of the terrorist organization. He just sold them hi tech military hardware, even as Morsi was a lawless leader and allowed Egypt's large Christian minority to suffer at the hand of the Islamic extremists. The President of the United States gave the Brotherhood strength and legitimacy. Instead of supporting a policy of strategic alliance with the secular democratic opposition to Morsi, Obama engendered more hostility toward the U.S. and missed an opportunity for real change in Egypt. Of course, Morsi's opposition are not a saintly bunch either. In the middle east, Americans have to get over the notion of good guys vs bad guys. It's mostly a matter of the less horribles. Cruz ended by calling on Congress to halt all aid to the Brotherhood and challenging lawmakers to "find the courage to speak out forcefully on behalf of those advocating secular democratic reforms in Egypt".
