Italian Culture, Hockey and American Liberalism

I know that this might sound really ridiculous but don't you just hate it when on the Sopranos or some other American shows that feature Italian cultura that they refer to Tomato sauce as Gravy!

I know I've mentioned it to a few of my Italian friends (the ones that aren't under indictment) (just kidding!!!!) and they all agree that it sounds really stupid. Either way I suppose it's not that important in the grand scheme of the world but I thought it deserved at least a minor rant on my behalf.   Now on to something which is truly important, congratulations to OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino and all the police forces across Canada that have initiated a major crackdown and scores of arrests in what looks to be a major child pornography ring here in Canada. Holding their press conference Tuesday on the internationally-recognized Safe Internet Day, Fantino announced that they made the arrests on Monday and that there are more charges and arrests are pending. A shocking bit of information released on the investigation is that there are over 15,000 people in Ontario that distribute child pornography on their computers. The police are certainly doing their jobs well and let's see if our somewhat weak and suspect judicial system is up to the task and really cracks down and punishes these vile and disgusting people.   For anyone who saw the horrific injury suffered by Florida Panthers forward Richard Zednik on the weekend when the carotoid artery on his neck was almost severed by the skate of teammate Olli Jokinen during their game with the Buffalo Sabres witnessed what happened to be without a doubt one of the most frightening and dramatic moments ever in professional sports. Thank God for the quick thinking of Panthers trainer Dave Zenobi who quickly used a towel to put pressure on the wound and slow the loss of blood. Even with that Zednik lost an incredible 5 units of blood and had to undergo potentially life saving surgery to reconnect the artery. It looks like Zednik is going to be okay and a big thumb up to all the great doctors and staff at Buffalo General Hospital, who had a part in saving the NHLrs career and most importantly his life. Twice in the past 6 months have Buffalo Surgeons and medical staff proven themselves to be truly world class, firstly in September when Buffalo Bill tight end Kevin Everett suffered a serious spinal cord injury which in most cases would have left him a paraplegic. Through a new technique by Buffalo surgeons, they lowered the temperature in the injured region with cool plasma before surgery and of course counted on Everett's toughness and faith. Everett able to walk through life on his own two feet. A round of applause and a raise of the glass to both of the courageous athletes and the world class medical staffs at one of the finest cities in the world, Buffalo.   I truly hope that all Americans see through the slick façade of  both of their Democratic Presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton for what they are, a couple of slick, opportunistic liberal shills that in a fragile world threatens to violently explode at almost anytime. Both would be hard pressed to show the slightest touch of leadership in times of crises. Obama has no experience and if you scratch beneath the surface of his speeches he really says nothing, and the good senator from New York, Hillary Clinton is lugging more baggage behind her than Heidi Fleis's sex life. World opinion sometimes rightfully pounces on the policy decisions made by the Bush Administrations but I believe that Bush leadership in the days, weeks and months after 9/11 held the western world together during one of the darkest periods in America's history. Liberalism and political correctness is no way to combat these real enemies at our doors. Bin Laden must squeal in pleasure when he reads the popularity polls of these two so called front runners for the highest position in the world. Remember being a successful political figure does not mean that they are remotely qualified to be what we all need most--a strong and courageous leader. There's nary a Churchill in the mix.. John McCain may be reviled by the far right of Republicanism and his views on immigration may make our head shake but I do see leadership in him, a quality sorely missing in his Democratic opponents.
