The Institute for Canadian Values and other pro-family groups have demanded change to Canada’s criminal code to protect our children from sex abuse. Today the Minister of Justice Rob Nicholson presented new legislation increasing minimum sentences from 14 days to 1 year for a child rapist.

The Institute for Canadian Values applauds Minister Nicholson’s good intentions however we call upon him to rethink the proposed one year mandatory minimum sentence for penetrating a child. Dr. Charles McVety, President, says “We are thankful that the government has heard the cries of parents across the country however this appears to be the sugar coating of a bad apple. We have demanded 15 year minimum sentences to keep perpetrators off the street and our children safe. No loving mother or father in the country would agree that a one year sentence is justice for someone who rapes a child. ”
