Tom Brokaw: More legal guns will mean more 'homegrown terrorism'

Imagine you’ve just worked (and probably partied) your tail off for a few years.  You’ve been given a slip of paper that says you’re smart, and you’re ready to enter “the real world.”  Sure, these days that means you’re probably moving back home to live with your parents but you’re hopeful and eager nonetheless. It’s time to get out there and do ....whatever it is you’re going to do.

But first, you get to spend part of your big graduation day listening to some left-wing figurehead as they prattle on about how exercising your rights will lead to more homegrown terrorism.

Sound like fun?

Well, let’s see how things went at The University of Mississippi. Take it away, Tom Brokaw!

The newsman didn’t shy away from controversial topics such as gun control as well as racial and gender equality. He told graduates “the rule of law is inadequate if the rule of heart isn’t an equal partner.”

On gun issues, Brokaw said common sense has to prevail. He mentioned the record number of homicides nearby in Memphis.

“I’m appalled by the determination of organizations and individuals to arm more people without any appreciation of the consequence of evermore lethal weapons in our midst,” he said. “More guns and more firearm tolerance will mean more homegrown acts of terror.

“Yes, we have a constitutional right to own guns ... but with that right comes a personal obligation to be on guard against the promiscuous use of guns (and) not to pretend that no limits means no trouble.”

As Brokaw noted in his speech, he’s an active sport-shooter himself. He’s famously bragged about having a closet full of guns in his Montana home. Despite that, the left’s gun-phobia is on full display as Brokaw willfully conflates “weapon” with “motive.”

It’s adorable that he pays lip-service to the idea that 2nd Amendment actually exists but the fact is he’s making the same idiotic argument that’s made by every statist gun-grabber: “Guns are bad, and they kill people. It’s not that people have lost their respect for life, or that we coddle criminals, or that we aren’t doing enough to deal with mental illness & drug addiction, or that our culture is rotting from the inside out.  Nope.  Guns (unlike every other weapon on Earth) cause and terrorism and crime all by themselves.”

It’s a ridiculous notion, but it’s the core of the argument.

Someone should ask Mr. Brokaw about the “Greatest Generation” whose virtues he loves to extol. In their heyday, gun ownership was just as common as it is today. Why did the massive amount of guns they owned fail to generate “homegrown terrorism” but now, just 60-or-so years later, we’re supposedly incapable of responsibly handling the things?

Answer that question and you’ll have gotten to the real heart of the issue.

Blaming guns is easy, and politically expedient for the left, but it’s also a way for them to ignore the social issues they themselves have created. It seems University of Mississippi students managed to take one more class before they walked out the door - Scapegoating 101.
