One Nation under God

Unusual Happenings?

Last week, we saw destruction of Hurricane Irene slam the East Coast. We saw massive flooding take down businesses, homes. Roads were washed out. Lives disrupted.
Now, we are facing again the same scenario —Tropical Depression 13 (updated to Tropical Storm Lee) has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and is set to affect the Gulf States. Louisiana is looking at possibly twenty inches of rain, Mississippi and Alabama will be affected as well. Hurricane Katia is now churning and may impact the U.S. soon. A 7.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska hours ago with a tsunami warning to the Aleutian Islands. How close are we paying attention to these unusual happenings? Or are they really all that unusual? They shouldn’t be if we acknowledge the sovereignty of Almighty God in our nation, as we say, “One Nation under God” and realize that He is indeed Lord of our lives.

We see destruction occur and are astonished at its magnitude, but after a time, we continue to go about our lives the same as before with no visible change. God will cause disruption to come into our lives until we come to Him with repentance and recognize the need to rely on Him. That means handing over everything to Him--our finances to Him (not politicians in Washington), our cares, worries. Our very lives are in His hands, even if some refuse to admit it. "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.” –Matthew 6:19 (NIV) We are to set our minds heavenward. Then all these things will be added. We can’t put our trust in anyone but the Lord Jesus Christ who is our anchor in the times we live in. Jesus said in Matthew 24: 6… “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.” The question is, who do you put your faith in? The Lord Jesus Christ said not to worry, to lean on Him. “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” –Isaiah 26:3 (NLT) Yes there is an increase in these happenings. Not just in America, but around the world. The only person who can sustain us during such trying times is the Lord Jesus Christ. Where is your faith America? Will we look heavenward and regroup, or will we see disaster after disaster affect our country and not recognize the day in which we live? Again, Jesus said, “You know how to interpret the weather signs in the sky, but you don't know how to interpret the signs of the times!” –Matthew 16:3 (NLT) So many Bible verses come to mind when addressing the days we live in and the days to come and how we must stand. “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong.”- 1 Corinthians 16:13 (NIV) Don’t just take my word for it; open your Bible. Start reading! It’s all there, all you need to remain sustained, focused, and vigilant. Let’s get back on our feet America! Let’s endure until the end!
