advent of the soulless society

February 16, 2004

In a nation so dependent on the politically correct, it was bound to happen sooner than later: a group of secular humanists trying to give a voice to Canada’s "great, Godless masses" has won what it calls a precedent-setting government recognition of humanism’s value to Canadians.

Revenue Canada recently expedited a constitutional challenge on the issue and granted the Humanist association of Toronto charitable status as an organization "beneficial to the community as a whole".

Interesting to note how the status followed so closely on the heels of a motion banning teaching the Bible, put forward by New Democratic Party (NDP) MP Svend Robinson, when the Liberals under Paul Martin returned in jubilation to the House of Commons.

For the uninitiated, humanism rejects all notions of God and is the leading alternative to organized religion everywhere.

But it took Revenue Canada and the Canadian government to put humanism on the map. Humanists themselves readily admit that their movement was going nowhere without them because humanism has not always garnered such respect. Originally, the Canadian government had rejected a request for charity designation by the Toronto group, whose mandate includes performing at weddings and funerals without references to God. Or as humanists put it, "free of supernatural implications".

Humanists don’t view their recent success as random, or as a success courtesy of slipping through the cracks. "To us, it’s now quite clear: The promotion of humanism is of benefit to society in the eyes of the federal government," said Sheena Sharp, a spokeswoman for the association.

"For a long time, we’ve felt that we were not at the table, so to speak, when it comes to ethical concerns…We think if people are going to be making decisions on this basis, someone should be standing up and speaking for the great, Godless masses."

although in the beginning Revenue Canada officials ruled the association failed to qualify as a religion because its members did not "pray to a deity or supreme being", it reversed itself and settled out of court when the association appealed to the Federal Court of Canada.

Where are the "great, Godless masses" claimed by the humanists?

about 18 percent of Canadians list themselves as atheists in the census.

With humanism now recognized by the federal government of Canada as "beneficial to the community as a whole", how long before the United Nation’s advocated religion of Gaia finds government recognition?

With the UN’s relentless bid to force a godless religion on an unsuspecting world, Canada’s federal government is the one that opened the door.

Welcome to a soulless society, courtesy of Canada’s Liberal government.
