Prime Minister Paul Martins same-sex campaign is an "insult" to 66 percent of the people in this country, according to Dr Charles McVety, a leader of the Defend Marriage Coalition.
In a strongly worded statement following the Martin teams release of its pro-same-sex slogan that says "Its The Charter, Stupid!" Dr McVety said the Prime Ministers team "relies increasingly on intimidation and condescending rhetoric to stifle intelligent debate, and that is alarmingly disrespectful of, and even hostile, to Canadians whose views differ from their own, particularly those views that reflect the thoughtful opinion of Canadians of faith".
Dr McVety said the Defend Marriage Coalition "has taken great pains to ensure that this debate is respectful and non-partisan, and we will continue to do so.
"We acknowledge and respect the fact that some of our fellow Canadians, Mr. Martin included, dont share our view that marriage should not be redefined, however 66 per cent of Canadians do. Disagreeing with Mr. Martin does not make us stupid and it is adolescent to say it does. Where is this country headed when the Prime Minister's team marginalizes and demonizes citizens who disagree with him?" McVety said.
Referring to the Martin team tactics being "like a bully in a playground", Dr McVety said the insulting tactic is clearly a "panic move on his part. He cannot debate the issue so he resorts to name-calling.
"We believe that its time for real Liberals to wake up to what their party is becoming under the direction of Team Martin," McVety said.
He claimed that the Liberal Party has descended so low that "this is truly a sad day for the Liberal Party and democracy in this nation".
The Defend Marriage Coalition is a group of grassroots pro-family advocacy organizations opposed to Martins anti-marriage legislation. The Coalition has warned Canadians to beware of Martins tactics after the Prime Minister launched a Liberal party campaign to belittle Canadians who oppose the proposed anti-marriage legislation, Bill C-38.
"We are very surprised and saddened that Mr. Martins supporters would choose to take the low road in this debate, labelling those who disagree with them as stupid. We are especially troubled that they would do so with such pride," McVety said.
"What does Team Martin say about long-time Liberals like Roger Gallaway, John McKay, Tom Wappel, Dan McTeague and dozens of other Liberal MPs who agree that the Charter does not demand that marriage be redefined? are they just stupid too?" he asked.
Dr McVety went on to encourage Canadians to visit the Coalition's website www.defendMaRRIaGE.ca for up-to-date campaign information.
