State of the Union, the Democrats reply

The emperor's new clothes

By John Burtis

It was sure grand watching the hip new Democratic mouthpiece, Virginia's governor and current stalking horse, Tim Kaine, deliver the slick and well rehearsed rebuttal to President Bush's State of the Union address in that well appointed salon which served as his backdrop.

We all know that the Democrats have been torn for some time about the selection of the newest appliqué to be applied to their careworn and tawdry set of ideals in order for them to gain some improved traction with an american populace which has grown ever more jaded over the past few decades. The barest rumors and the slightest hints of change have been leaking from the highest levels of the Democratic leadership for some time - from inside the beltway, from the mosh pits in the very best hotels in Davos, from the yacht harbor in Hyannisport, from around the many campfires which dot the tent city outside of the Crawford ranch, and in the flood of e-mails from Harry Reid to Nancy Pelosi, which the NSa is forwarding to Rush Limbaugh as part of the war on terror.

But having seen the talk, we now know the result of all the secrecy and the high-level chatter. This new message is wrapped in missionary zeal, cloaked in a Brooks Brothers suit, sonorously spoken, pointed out in rapid staccato style, spoken in parables yet remains draped in the same old lies and Democratic propaganda.

Communities are forced, we are told in a voice as smooth as silk, in a delivery honed before many a mirror, in so many cases to fend for themselves and to make do on their own. From Katrina to Virginia, local folks have been forced, forced to band together to come up with, gasp, plans to get by in big government's absence. apparently the times have demanded extraordinary things of ordinary people as they cope with local problems, and we're told that this is dreadful, spiteful and hurtful.

From fire and police to the vaunted public schools, which are alone responsible for a child's education, the current government has failed to provide enough in materials, supplies and training.

and fear is rampant and invidious everywhere. There is fear for those with healthcare, fear in prescriptions, fear for those without healthcare and fear for those with the wrong healthcare. Fear for the elderly and the young, alike.

There is fear for our troops, who must still, and seemingly forever, labor with a lack of the proper body armor and a lack of armored Humvees, and a lack of proper healthcare and who face another vast cut in medical benefits because of the Republicans.

There is great fear abroad in the land because it is now well known that america and Congress and, above all, the Democrats, were led astray going into the war in Iraq and remain so today in the intelligence arena. america has been duped and misled and lied to and it's got to stop.

But the Democrats will end this terror and fear visited on the people and big federal government will again be dispatched to small towns to help. Money from all over america will be hosed through a willing Democratic Congress and apportioned by seniority and pork-value to the needy as determined by their electoral value.

The communiqué remains the same--the story of government, albeit a friendlier, a happier, a more fiscally "prudent", a more attuned, but still government--big, federal government--providing all to the small communities who are so beset and taxed by the current failure of the Republicans in Washington to deliver anything to the communities except grief and toil.

The wrapping--the man, the suit, the delivery, the smile, the eyebrow tics, the moderately priced tie, the lack of Howard Dean-like pop-eyed yawping, the paucity of John Kerry-like monotonous droning, the dearth of Ted Kennedy-like senseless hogwash--was new and quite startling.

But good plain talk shifted to surreality when Governor Kaine launched into a long monologue on the sainted liberal stances on honesty, openness, partisanship, cronyism and the ethics of service. Having viewed the alito asininity, listened to the Thomas hearings, watched the sleight of hand in the Clinton escapades, waited for the Barrett report, read of Jimmy Carter's calling for money laundering for Hamas through the UN, and watched any number of the Kennedy spalpeen in government with mixed results, I think these attempts at seriousness on these matters can be quickly brushed aside.

But then, just when the Governor could've shuffled off the stage with a bit of self respect still left on the table and with his head held high, he dragged out the poor old ghost of Thomas Jefferson.

Like Knute Rockne in the crucial 1928 Notre Dame/army game summoning up the Gipper's last words to insure victory, so the Democrats dug deep into the dusty bag of american heroes looking for a similar hook. They must have found an acceptable liberal who had attended public school before the unbounded coverage of the Seneca Falls Conference obliterated all of our heroic memories and remembered that Thomas Jefferson had acquired membership among our founding fathers for some reason or another.

Poor Jefferson, you'll remember, was last used by the Democrats as a punching bag in the fraud of a hoax of a sham of the Sally Hemmings caper when it seemed convenient to trowel mud on a founding father when Bill Clinton had disgraced and sullied the Presidency, the White House and the Oval Office. Bill felt it needful to hang a wreath of prevarications around Jefferson's neck in the vain attempt to show that his own shameful grovelings and accompanying perjury were less disturbing and offensive when viewed through the distorted lens of an invented history.

But, presto, to have Thomas Jefferson dusted off and rehabilitated so quickly and so surprisingly by the Democrats was shocking to the point of near cardiac arrhythmia for me, and for Jefferson, we can only imagine. and what does his sudden rehabilitation say for the Democrats? Like Khruschev, will they now begin to rehabilitate others who had fallen to the thought police of bygone years?

and then, in conclusion, in a volte face with massive implications to the aCLU, The NY Times, to Julius and Ethel Rosenberg's memory, Moveon.org, the fringe elements, the partisan base, the progressives, the avant garde everywhere, in an open and bold effort to garner support among the center and to both make inroads among and to sway the great numbers of the easily duped Christian america, as a slap to Pat Roberts, in an attempt to mimic Billy Graham, Tim Kaine, the Democrat's newly made man, openly prayed for healing.

My land, how the Democrats and the evening had turned. We're going to be in for the ride of our lives this year.

The Emperor has new clothes, a new PR man, a new song and dance and is freeing the falsely imprisoned. Sadly they have the same old prevarication riddled and shop worn product.

Can they sell it?
