Democrats, ports, vivid dreams

Down the drain

With the Dubai Ports International's agreement late Thursday afternoon to sell their interest to a US business entity, the latest and greatest Democratic inroad into the Republican domination of the national defense issue began its long slow slide into oblivion, and with it, the burgeoning Democratic hopes for a red carpeted cakewalk to absolute power.

In this recent and longest running scrimmage in the Democrats' rather thin playbook on defense, time has finally been called by the referees and the owners. The crowds, officials and the foreign nationals are quitting the rather weather beaten, worn and dilapidated field--leaving the trash, a mountain of old newspaper clippings, high hopes, broken dreams, the echoes of tub thumping speeches, rousing plans for a run on the capital, hopes for a massive sweep in the upcoming election, rented tuxedos, the dreams of a swift impeachment process, and the expectancy of a new office for Nancy Pelosi to blow in the wind.

Nope, port security was the crucial lynchpin conjuring the heated dreams of the Democrats--like the white hot magma chamber that drives Yellowstone Park--which would first propel them to the absolute control of the House and Senate and then to the occupation of the White House with almost any candidate of their choosing. But a few telephone calls late Thursday afternoon meant that the final destruction of President Bush, the elimination of the Republican Party from the american political scene and triumph of liberalism forever fell apart like a house of cards, popped liked a paper bag smacked by a school kid, ended like the wheezing of an accordion when it's pushed together, imploded like a corn filled silo when struck by a tornado, blew up like a flood borne house hitting a bridge abutment, looked like the final collapse of a hot air balloon, caught on like the final collapse of the housing bubble and reminded everyone of the crash of the Hindenburg.

Sure, the Democrats will try to keep the dying albatross of the ports alive for as long as possible, or at the very least, until the next forlorn hope can be identified, dusted off, rehabilitated and dragged to the forefront--where it will be introduced with incredible and cacophonous fanfare and mountains of editorials to the masses, the ward heelers, the preening cognoscenti, the sundry and distaff staffs, the elected officials, and above all, the Democratic candidates, as the next arrow in the never ending quiver of weapons used to attack the President and the Republicans in their ceaseless attempts to regain the power due them. Having come close enough to smell the fruits of victory and to have seen the tables set with the banquets of victory, the Democrats are crestfallen and angry. and like a wounded boar, they will bear watching as they thrash about in their death throes.

as for the main stream media, they will begin their parallel scramble to find the next perfect progressive weapon as well. The New York Times, CNN, NBC and the dupes and fellow travelers who checker the stalls involved in the parlaying of nonsense into news, the changing of fact into fiction and the manufacturing of polling data out of whole cloth will begin another cycle of production. The talking heads will begin their ceaseless search for another common word other than port, Dubai, security, scapegoat, gravitas and Harry Whittington. and the world will wait while they root around for it, and time its distribution between themselves, the rest of the media and the nodding political hacks.

and pity the poor White House Press corps. No sooner have they begun to heal from the whammies of both David Gregory disintegrations and to face their own private demons, so brutally exposed by the thoughtless actions of those they had trusted, but they are now faced with another blow in the shape of a port settlement shown to kick the shins of the very liberal gods they worship. They had grilled Mr. McClellan so mercilessly about those thieving ports, to boot, and had done their part right up until the end and then the Emirates had sold them out by putting the deal on the block. Now each one, in their own way, will weep for Hillary and Chuck, for whom the ports had meant so much and for which they had sacrificed even more. and now it's Friday and they have only one day to kvetch about being let down before the news cycle breaks for the weekend.

What about the lawsuits filed by the guys in New Jersey to block the Dubai deal? What will become of the longshoremen and will they finally find peace and happiness with an american company? Will the dreaded Halliburton be offered a chance to bid on the deal? Will the Democrats now find fault with a Halliburton bid even though they said it would be ok not too long ago? If Halliburton is allowed to bid will it somehow be Cheney's fault? Will Kellogg, Brown & Root be allowed to bid? Is Cheney involved with them, too? Will Cheney now be safely impeached?

and the ports, once the most fearsome of all weapons the Democrats had held, as they ponderously swayed ever closer to the upcoming election, will become, for better or worse, just another talking point. The word will join a list featuring Cheney, Dubai, hunting, Katrina, abramoff, and Miss Beazley, before it, too, just fades away.

The hopes of many Democrats seemingly dissolved Thursday evening as the news of the Dubai sell off first trickled then thundered through the grapevine, the phone trees and the party lines. Shocked operatives stared in disbelief as hopes, dreams and vacation plans were shattered.

and late last night found a dejected Harry Reid sitting in his office at home, slowly pouring the sand from his small Zen garden through his small but tidy fingers onto the rocks on the perfect wooden rectangle located on his desk top. He does this over and over as he thinks about what the future holds and tries to imagine what the next perfect weapon will be in his endless war against the dreaded Republicans, who have taken so much away from his party and his peace of mind. and when he steps into the tub to shower he notices a small boat endlessly circling the drain and remembers the ports.
