Michael Steele, Democrats, plan of attack

Dirty Pool

Friday, april 14, 2006

When I was a kid and played football, I was somewhat dismayed to hear a cheer, broadcast hoarsely by a crowd at a tough city school we played–"hit 'em high, hit 'em low, come on boys, hit 'em hard 'n low."

Today, thanks to its interception by a free safety at the New York Sun, we are beginning to get an idea of the kind of low blows and guerilla warfare to be waged against Michael Steele, Maryland's current Lieutenant Governor, the first black man ever elected to a statewide office, as he begins a run for the US Senate.

The first quarter of the attack featured the rather shabby recovery of Mr. Steele's private personal financial information by Katie Barge and Lauren Weiner, both members of Senator Chuck Schumer's Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee staff, who picked off his social security number from court records for an intense investigation of his private life, which, according to federal law, is supposed to be off limits.

These weren't just kids involved in this caper--performing actions which the vaunted high-falutin' white gloved Mr. Schumer had railed against for years. No, Ms. Barge was an old line Democratic operative from the Harold Ickes mold, with dirty sleeves, who worked for Mr. David Brock at Media Matters for america and was the research director for John Edwards. But Mr. Schumer's mea culpa rang rather hollow, however, when he stridently claimed that the masses of illegal information swept up in the dragnet were never used.

The women pleaded guilty and got off with a walk and community service-- the Bush justice department at work and play. The main stream media kept Mr. Schumer and women as far apart in their reporting as John Kerry keeps the ketchup away from his hotel dinner table, or so they say.

So, with this bit of play behind us and with the briefest of introductions to the liberal Democratic play of politics, especially in their treatment of african americans, one of their primary constituencies, it's time to set the stage for the brand spanking new Howard Dean approved plan of attack to be carried out against Mr. Steele.

The Sun further reports that Hellzapoppin' Howard Dean, the nonsense bawling DNC chairman, had Cornell Belcher of Brilliant Corners Research, his hand picked pollster, conduct a survey of likely black voters in Maryland and was shocked to find that a majority were open to voting for Mr. Steele.

according to the Sun, Mr. Belcher found that, "Younger black voters, especially men, as well as church goers and single mothers tended to be 'very open to Steele's value messaging.'"

and what can be done about this tragedy? How can the DNC fight against his repeated calls for decency, honesty and old time values? What new weapons can be employed to fight these vulgar and pernicious ethics, which seem to cloud the vision of the voters and lead them to the opposing camp? How can they stop the growing weakness of Democrats for work, family and their own homes?

Mr. Belcher sounds a uniquely clarion and Democratic call to arms, which Mr. Dean embraces wholeheartedly, "Democrats cannot afford to wait until after the primary election to knock Steele down. a persuasion campaign should start as soon as possible to discredit…Steele as a viable candidate for the community."

So, Mr. Dean and his minions are getting ready to begin their race based on the tarring and feathering of Mr. Steele and their linking of Mr. Steele to capitalist ideas, the stock market, to Social Security reform and other brands of outright evil. and they are also busily underwriting the old tried and true aspects of mud slinging, found in the fine print in the footnotes of the Plan.

The big red trucks will begin rolling in with the rumors, the tawdry innuendos, smears will begin to appear in the papers, tales of past indiscretions will surface, some of Mr. Schumer's dirt will fall like manna from heaven, past co-workers will cast a pall over innocuous incidents, Mr. Dean will claim no knowledge of the seamier inventions, other Democratic senators will recoil in simulated horror at the underhanded tactics employed, voting irregularities will be noted but not acted upon, strippers will remember a man with the same cologne, women will announce a misplaced paternity and Howard Dean will beam with pleasure at every wound inflicted.

But the big question, after the calumny of the Schumer incident, will it all work this time?

Will african-americans in Maryland fall for the Democratic propaganda machine of old and watch another successful son get stomped down by out of towners from Vermont?

as Carol Johnson, a lifelong Democrat, who changed to the GOP in 2003, and successfully ran for Mayor of District Heights explains, "I think it is going to get ugly. No telling what else they will pull out of their hat."

Knowing Mr. Howard Dean as we do, who can say how low he'll stoop in order to chalk up a senatorial win. after all, his job's on the line. What's Howard going to do, go back into medicine and heal people?

He'd rather play dirty pool.
