Lebanon, Hezbollah, Israel, borders

There is a fifth dimension separating Israel and Lebanon

By John Burtis

Wednesday, august 9, 2006

"There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call "The Twilight Zone".' - Rod Serling

Mr. Serling has framed the reality between the manifold freedoms offered by the modern State of Israel and the mediaeval madness of Hezbollah and the enforced theocracy of Islam perfectly in the above opening to his famous show. and his fifth dimension represents the real border between Lebanon and Israel, as approved by the UN in 2000, where stark reality meets terror's hideous imagination.

It is amazing to think of the laws governing the hapless residents of the lands ruled by Hezbollah and their natty leader, Sheikh Nasrallah. There law and order, bread and chocolate, and the welfare state come at such a terrible cost in civil liberties, torture, and death.

Yes, subsidized food, water, and clothing, can be had at the expense of personal freedom, for the payment of tribute in body and soul, and for the worshipful praises directed toward the Sheikh, his boyos, and his masters in Iran.

Much of Lebanon has descended into a veritable Twilight Zone of forced depravity, where its population is caught between the forces of Islamist hooligans, the fascist states of Syria and Iran, the roving militias of toughs shaking down locals, the growing Iranian proxies of Hezbollah and their foreign military cadres from Tehran, renegades from Hamas, and feckless, footloose UN "peacekeepers," who wander the country without proper leadership, command and control, albeit missionless, hoping to escape the growing madness. and, of course, there are the political humbugs from Beirut.

and in this moonless night of evil, butchers roam the streets, launching missiles from the houses of the innocent, using children as shields, laughing up their sleeves at any talk of peace, while more advanced weapons appear almost every day from their Syrian pipeline. It is a place we — citizens of a free america — can only imagine in our nightmares.

Sure, the ideologically blinded reporters from the progressive drive by media and blasé UN rapporteurs are "allowed" to scamper around under the watchful eyes of their Hezbollah keepers and take their hammed up photos, and are very occasionally allowed to lose their leashes for a moment or two, and feel mirthful for these happenstances which as rare as Philosopher's Stone, just as american reporters were allowed a similar "access" in Nazi Germany before December 8, 1941.

But their views are as contrived, staged, and as censured as those great stories about that genius for all ages and all times Josef Stalin and his industrial miracles were in the 1930s, where all the mass murderers were described by the New York Times as saints, and his proles as being well fed, and the slaves in the camps as performing "meaningful" labor while receiving sufficient "nourishment."

Hezbollah demonstrated for the press their tender mercies last Sunday night when they launched their first six or so Fajr-5 missiles into Haifa, a decided escalation, carried out with the help of Republican Guards from Iran, no doubt, on the very day the US and France announced the basis for a ceasefire.

This latter act indicates that their mailing address is fully in the Twilight Zone, where their motives are clearly hovering around "the pit of man's fears."

Yet little main stream press time is wasted on this war's new escalation.

Meanwhile, across the border in Israel, the missiles killed and wounded innocents in the brightly lit city of Haifa, where the local media broadcast the scenes of injuries and death for the world to see, but where little is said in our own unique brand of drive by media hit pieces, which so openly favor the terror mongers and the murderers from the encroaching 12th century darkness who inhabit the growing Twilight Zone to the north.

The whole idea of the border between Israel and Lebanon reminds me of the old Casino Royale movie with Woody allen, David Niven, about 10 directors, and a cast of thousands.

There's that classic scene illustrating the border between East and West Berlin which is so perfectly illuminated on the left, with the bright lights, numerous pedestrians, american MPs, neon signs and traffic in the West and offset by a perfect dividing line and the empty, dull, gray, klieg lit, with a slight pink coloration, and depressing worker's paradise in the East to the right.

So it is between Israel and Lebanon, a nebulous but too often fatal fifth dimension between democracy and oppressive theocracy, between light and shadow, science and superstition, the demarcation between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge, where lurking evil incarnate is defended by our liberal media, our like minded politicians, and the guns and missiles of Hezbollah, while science and true liberalism are damned for daring to fight for their own survival.

and so goes our war on terror. It occupies the very same borders and dimensions. and sadly, few people will recognize these differences until terror calls for them in their own neighborhood.

There is another Twilight Zone episode which illustrates that sorry story, too. It is called, The Monsters are Due on Maple Street.

If we do not start taking international terrorism and Islamist fascism seriously, and recognize the real horror that it represents right now in Lebanon, we will face it on our own Maple Streets and Franklin avenues, someday, just as the Israelis are grappling with it on Balfour Street and the 2nd of November Street in Haifa, and all over the rest of their small country, as it falls from the sky. Just as it once fell on England.

Let it never be said again that we gave away another democratic country for a piece of paper guaranteeing peace.

Sentencing Israel to one more prolonged war of attrition without a victory over terror would return us all to an area we call the Twilight Zone.
