We all remember Mr. Chamberlain as the great appeaser, which he was up to a point. But he finally understood the Nazi menace, while the Democrats utterly fail to grasp the true horror offered by militant Islam.
Neville drew his line in the sands of shifting fortunes and honored his commitments to Poland on September 1st, 1939, when the panzers and the Luftwaffe, in their first real test, crushed the Polish cavalry and massacred the Polish air force in the air and on the ground in record time.
In the time leading up to this drama, however, the government of Mr. Chamberlain had witnessed the re-occupation of the Rhineland in 1936, the delirious anschluss with austria in March of 1938, the swallowing of the Sudetenland in late September of 1938, followed by the occupation of the remaining rump of Czechoslovakia in March of 1939.
Gradually, the early zest for appeasement lost its taste along the timeline of Hitler's continual lust for land, peoples to enslave, industries to steal, and national treasures to plunder.
In a few short months, the majority of Englishmen and Chamberlain - faced with Germany's tightening noose, whose hangman's long term goals had been so acutely defined and his anti-Semitism had been exposed ad nauseam in his best selling Mein Kampf - had finally realized the rules attached to Hitler's game.
In america, where many of us still sleep soundly, where our sworn enemies are building atomic bombs, where our homeland has been attacked -- the Democratic Party, much of our media, a growing anti-war establishment, our shrill left-wing politicians, both in and out of office - are busily engaged in finding reasons not to fight, to admit that there is no enemy abroad at night seeking our throats, and that we will best be served by ignoring the vicious unrelenting forces allied against us.
Despite evidence as clear as that which opened the eyes of Neville Chamberlain and his cabinet, as well as the people of England - who finally turned away from their brief affair with the likes of Oswald Moseley, his capering Black Shirts, and their lackeys - the Democrats refuse to abandon the Vietnam syndrome and assemble the growing evidence into stiffer spines.
Even with all of it laid out in order, their eyes remain glued shut to the growing danger.
November, 1979 -- The american hostages are taken in Tehran, showing the US to be a hollow reed.
april, 1983 -- a vehicle explodes at the US Embassy in Beirut, killing 63.
October, 1983 -- The Marine Barracks in Beirut is destroyed, killing 241 servicemen.
December, 1983 -- a truck bomb explodes at the US Embassy in Kuwait, killing 5 and injuring 80.
September, 1984 -- a car bomb explodes at the US Embassy in Beirut, 16 killed.
april, 1985 -- a bomb explodes in a restaurant in Madrid frequented by US soldiers, killing 18.
October, 1985 -- The cruise ship, achille Lauro, is hi-jacked and Leon Klinghoffer is executed and thrown overboard in his wheelchair.
april, 1986 -- a bomb explodes in TWa 840 over Greece, killing 4.
December, 1988 -- Pan am 103 explodes over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 270.
January, 1993 -- Two CIa employees are murdered on the way into work in Langley, Va, by a Muslim man, who flees to Pakistan.
February, 1993 -- The first attack takes place on the WTC, 6 killed, 1000 injured.
November, 1995 -- US military complex is bombed in Riyadh, Saudi arabia, 7 killed.
June, 1996 -- Truck bomb destroys Khobar Towers, in Dharan, Saudi arabia, killing 19 and injuring 500.
October, 2000 -- The USS Cole is struck by a boat packed with explosives, killing 17 and drawing the FBI to Yemen.
September 11, 2001 -- 2,996 people killed in the four attacks on the United States, coordinated by al-Qaeda.
March, 2006 -- an SUV operated by a Muslim injures 9 in a hit and run rampage at the UNC-Chapel Hill.
July, 2006 -- 1 killed, 6 wounded by a Muslim in a shooting spree at the Jewish Community Center in Seattle, it is later identified as a hate crime.
august, 2006 -- Muslim man goes on a hit and run spree in a Jewish section of San Francisco, injuring 14 and the suspect may be involved in the death of a man in an unrelated hit and run incident.
With all these attacks, deaths of americans, and the threat of violent Islamists running through them all, the Democrats remain steadfast appeasers at best and base cowards at the very worst. and Rich Lowry is touched at how trusting the liberals are of the mullahs in Tehran.
England awoke from its slumber without a direct attack on its island, its people and its way of life, simply by recognizing the growing danger to its survival.
We have not.
We, however, are fighting our own phony war, thanks to the idiocy practiced by our party in opposition, much like what was fought between September 1st of 1939 and May 10th of 1940, when the real Blitzkrieg finally changed the world, caused the surrender of France, and resulted in a new government in England -- a government dedicated to fighting the Nazis tooth and nail, to the last bullet and pitchfork if necessary, for national survival.
america, however, may well have a change of government this fall, but it will not lead to a one dedicated to fighting against the forces dedicated to our destruction.
On the contrary, a Democratic government will preside over the immense strengthening of our foes thanks to their policies of weakness and inherent faintheartedness, while our own defenses, so dreadfully reduced during the reign of Mr. Clinton, could well be finally gutted under his ideological successors, who will again search for the continuation of the "peace" dividend to pay for "health care" while our cities are incinerated.
after all, the Democrats involved in this government have paid no heed whatsoever to the mounting evidence of our growing conflict with militant Islam, at home and abroad.
Nor will they until is far too late.
They are a party consumed by a hatred for themselves, their country, the Republican Party, President Bush, and remain blind to all other threats.
They are the party of defeat.
