Today the swords and shields of the Democratic Party have become the foot soldiers on the web, the shills with the ready questions on a candidate's religious heritage, and those who can construct a different past from the shards available today.
Years ago the motto of the KGB was the 'Sword and Shield of the Party' - the Communist Party of course. and they performed a lot of "wet" jobs – murders – in pursuit of their watchwords, to say nothing of engaging in smear campaigns, planting false stories in their controlled press and those operated by willing foreign dupes, and trafficking in phony documents designed to frame their enemies.
Of course today, the Democrats can't openly murder deviationists, operate a vast Gulag system for political prisoners at a profit – they eschew the word - use the enslaved Zheks to build enormous and completely worthless public works projects as a form of re-education, or slaughter entire peoples like the good old blue tabs in the KGB used to do.
Oh my, no. Even such utterly mindless and intemperate solons in the Senate as John McCain and Lindsey Graham might notice the vastness of such an enterprise and deign to make a comment or two. They might rise and call upon Howard Dean for an answer to the complaints they'd received about the many amtrak trains seen bringing rag draped Republicans to these huge secret industrial centers.
But the Democrats do a darned good job mimicking the KGB's lesser pantomimes every night on cable television, where you can see one campy Democratic piece of performance art after another happening on every news channel using the same adjectives with the same goals in mind.
In fact, the closer the long lamented elections approach, the more intense the these ludicrous parlor games become, the greater the generation of vicious drivel on the major blogs, the equally slovenly language in the Kos posts, and the more obscene the public racial and religious inquisitions become.
and now, of course, we're now being treated to the sublime farce of finding that a college classmate of a Republican senator heard from another man that a football player he'd overheard in a saloon years ago said that he'd heard another man say that the senator was racially insensitive. and it comes to light now. What an amazing coincidence.
So the swords and shields of the new Democratic Party have become those who manufactured the snide Oreo cookies slur as practiced on Mr. Michael Steele in Maryland by Mr. Cardin's staff, which didn't even draw a yawn from the power brokers at the DNC, from the left side of the Senate, or in the empty pages at the Times. Or the snide word games practiced on the name of Joe Lieberman's wife in MoveOn.Org, again found the leading progressive fat cats fast asleep. More recently, we were treated to the supposedly innocent, but notoriously seedy, faux public concern about George allen's Jewish antecedents, which again failed to trip the "liberal" Democratic leadership's snooze alarm. Then, of course, we had ring side seats to Chuck Schumer's - the premier personal privacy scion – staff member's use of Mr. Steele's social security number to "protect" him. and, we are routinely treated to the next purloined but "secret" document to appear in the front pages of the New York Times, published for the public interest, of course, and carried via moles or Mr. Berger's underwear and fetid socks.
Where the big guns, like the Clintons, Carter, Schumer, and Howard Dean once reigned as supremely as Stalin's heavy artillery on the political battlefield, the new, smaller units are increasingly united around anti-Semitism, racism, the quick public racial investigation, lurid religious ditties, the invasion of our privacy, and, of course, the repressed memories of long lost acquaintances. all of which are designed to hurt and humiliate their opponents, drive them from the field, trip them up publicly, or to destroy associated soft targets, like their spouses and children.
already the growing numbers of these profane Democratic infantrymen - the bloggers of hate, the drummers and outers of race, the archaeologists of inflammatory words, and the constructors of repressed memories - have become such a major entrenched fraction of the overall left-wing force that they cannot be winnowed away without a serious blow to the DNC's efforts. and because of their power, energy, and their bulging purses, they won't be.
The Democratic Party has truly become everything which they accuse the Republicans of being, and then some.
Even while they publicly accuse the Republicans of similar transgressions, the Democrats continually allow their beards to practice these wholesale manufacturing duties, using whole cloth or flimsies, as the swords and shields of the Democratic Party on a daily basis, in every available medium.
The old guard at the KGB would be so proud.
