  • Did Kofi turn to bible for recipes?
  • Uncharacteristically mum since the re-election of President George W. Bush, United Nations Secretary General Kofi annan seems to have been spending his time peeking into the Bible.

How else to explain how Cypriot farmers, beset with a plague of locusts, are being advised on a UN website to eat them?

Reminding farmers that locusts are protein rich, UN rubes advise that you can boil, stir-fry or roast them. Recipes for making the locusts a dinner plate item are available by logging on to the UN’s Rome-based Food and Cultural Organization (FCO).

Luckily, locusts could be the only winged creatures not on the UN endangered species list. No one knows that more than the Cypriot farmers, whose skies have blackened with locust swarms, landing in Cyprus from africa.

One recipe posted on FCO, originating from a tribe in southern africa, advises that locust legs--cooked up the right way--are particularly tasty. The recipe calls to grind up locust legs to a fine powder to be carried in a pouch and eaten on a long journey. "The legs, when dried, are especially relished for their pleasant taste."

"Please send us yours!" entreats the site. FCO means recipes, and not the locusts, of course.

For gourmands of stronger stomach: "Take several dozen locust adults, preferably females, slit the abdomen lengthwise and stuff a peanut inside. Then lightly cook the locusts in a wok or hot frying pan, adding a little oil and salt to taste. Be careful not to overcook or burn them."

People have been eating locusts since Biblical times.

according to the Holy Book’s Christian New Testament, John the Baptist survived on locusts and honey when he was out in the desert. Because the Greek name "acridae" also stands for the tips of plants, no one can be sure the good man was really subsisting on locusts.

after the worst infestation recorded in africa for more than a decade, the locusts began landing in eastern Mediterranean countries in early November.

So, did the omnipresent UN get their recipe ideas from the Bible?

Is Kofi annan, who has been advocating Maurice Strong’s and Mikhail Gorbachev’s Earth Charter as a replacement for the Ten Commandments, a true Christian?

according to staff, annan is a Christian who attends a number of Protestant churches in New York City.

Even though the one world religion of Gaia is part of the plan for One World Order, annan himself, says he is a Christian: "No religion or ethical system should ever be condemned because of the moral lapses of some of its adherents," annan said in a speech at Tubinger University, Germany, on December 12, 2003. "If I, as a Christian, for instance, would not wish my faith to be judged by the actions of the Crusaders or the Inquisition, I should be very careful to judge anyone else’s faith by the actions that a few terrorists commit in its name."
