a New Security alert in Zimbabwe:
army Increases alert Status

Monday, april 25, 2005

Reports from Zimbabwe are indicating that the armed Forces and other elements that handle internal security are on a state of heightened readiness. This comes to light after a Online News Portal reported that the Government has information that the Opposition Movement for Democratic Change will suffered an humiliating and possibly fraudulent defeat may launch street protests to challenge the outcome. This information is according to the Central Intelligence Organization.

The report stated that a joint security command comprising of army Police and CIO Commanders made the decision to increase security measures following the start of the rumors of a series of street protests were being planned by the MDC. They were going to protest what have been seen as an unfair election by Independent Observers.

according to Legal Brief africa a publication of the International Bar association that is published in London the MDC is launching a legal challenge to the results in 13 constituencies. at this time no decision on whether to launch any Political Resistance is yet to be made. an attempt to reach a high ranking member of the MDC failed. But speaking at a gathering at Zimbabwe’s embassy in Italy President Mugabe stated that any protests will be crushed. Before the elections the army did recall their soldiers on leave or those that had recently retired to increase manpower in case that there were problems.

This Information comes to light as the MDC is launching a program outside Zimbabwe. In recent days it announced that it was ending relations with the South african Government. The Government of Thabo Mbeki has been seen by many as shielding the Mugabe regime from International Scrutiny. also the U.S. Congress is holding a special hearing about the elections and what decisions the USa can make. This comes a week after hundreds of the Diaspora converged on the U.S. Capital to raise awareness of the plight back home.

Some questions have now risen after the successful advocacy day that was held in Washington. What new role will Washington play in resolving the crisis? Will it act alone? Will it act to support South africa? Whatever happens the world is looking for the U.S. to provide leadership in this crisis as well as many others. Will america deliver? Or will we fail? Time alone will judge that
