The phrase, “Houston, we have a problem”, is a famous misquote of the Apollo 13 radio call, “Houston, we've had a problem”. nevertheless, the expression of concern and potential life-threatening danger would become a staple of the English language that would be akin to signaling the fact that extreme danger is at hand. And so it is in today's Canada when one observes the crumbling of the integrity and credibility of police forces that used to be populated by larger-than-life figures like Sam Steele of the North-West Mounted Police. The legendary Steele had a “knack for leveraging public support that could see intractable situations resolved to the benefit of the good and to the detriment of the corrupt ”. What to think today as police officers such as these, like Helen Grus, seek to investigate the possibility of corruption and then are themselves hauled before disciplinary proceedings by their superiors for doing so?
