The word compostable does a lot of work on a coffee package. It suggests something close to disappearing, a pod that returns quietly to soil while you get on with your morning. That image is appealing, and it is not entirely wrong. But compostable is a technical term with specific conditions attached, and the gap between the label and the outcome is where most people get confused.

Understanding what compostable coffee pods actually require is not an argument against them. It is the only way to know whether they will work for your household, because the answer genuinely depends on where you live.
