The recent Supreme Court decision to reverse the federal government’s support of what has become known as “abortion rights,” has essentially created a divisive earthquake throughout the nation, with people taking sides, and one side taking to intimidating rhetoric, aggressive and threatening protests, as well as street theater by elected officials. What must be understood is that such recent division is not so recent. The Roe v. Wade decision divided the nation when it was first handed down by the Supreme Court under Chief Justice Warren Burger in 1973. At the time, it was unlikely that the justices may have realized how incredibly divisive and destructive that one decision would render the nation.
