How We Got Our Lilies According to Greek Mythology

Hera was the Greek Goddess of women and marriage, and also known as Queen of Heaven, wife – and in some accounts – sister of Zeus, supreme deity, ruler of the celestial realm. Unfortunately, as were many of the Greek gods, Zeus was unfaithful, much to Hera’s continuing displeasure. Zeus dallied with the mortal woman Alceme and from this union was born Hercules, who was to become renowned for his strength and endurance. This was thanks to Zeus’ desire for his son to partake more fully of divinity. Thus, while Hera slept, he placed the baby at her breast. Hera awoke and horrified hurled Hercules from her. The milk spurting from her breast swept across the heavens to form the Milky Way. However, a few drops fell down upon the earth and where they landed sprang the first lilies. So it is explained why the lily became dedicated to the goddess Hera – at least in Greek mythology.
