WASHINGTON, D.C. — Should you spot a Tesla electric car on the road, see if the driver is smiling. He should be smiling at you, for contributing $7500 to the purchase price of his luxury automobile. That’s because every Tesla Model S or X — which range in price from $66,000 to $150,000 — qualifies for a $7,500 federal tax credit. And many states offer additional incentives for buying electric vehicles. It’s time for taxpayers to stop subsidizing status symbols for the wealthy.
